WANT TO TAKE SUMMER OFF

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread

I am really feeling guilty because I want to take the summer off from teaching lessons. I haven't mentioned this to my students. On the one hand, I know it is beneficial to them to continue during the summer months, and I risk losing some if I don't see them during the summer, but frankly, I have my own projects that need my attention and I'm a bit burnt out! I found that even when I chose two days a week to teach during the summer, It always conflicted with the students vacations so I would accommodate then and give another day, which only inconvenienced me--but I didn't want to lose them. I don't even feel the desire to teach ONE day a week, and say, if that doesn't work, we'll see if it can work for you the next week. Any thoughts?

Wow!! In the past I've tried to get students to take lessons during the summer with almost no success!

Actually it's very beneficial for them to take a rest for the same reasons as for you. I would just say," I will not be teaching in the summer to allow for a break. But everything will resume as per normal in August (September). "

I doubt you'll lose anybody. For those students who just can't get enough of you, you could offer them sewing lessons! Remember, change is as good as a rest.

All the best.

Well, I assume that you will still practice during the summer, so why not just design a "summer package" of extra music for students to work on if desired?

I'm sure lots of students have other plans during the summer as well and will welcome the break.
