There ya go, man. I wasn't sure if you'd look back at the euthanasia topic, so I'll give you the "sources" here. I say "sources" because I don't really know if they support the con side to the topic. I haven't read them cause I'm busy working on a paper, but I'll get around to them. Happy hunting!

You know I can't remember either. Oh well. We can use this thread. What do you want to talk about?

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), November 11, 2004.

O.k., I've got one.

Why does popular music suck so bad? I'm trying to think of bright spots in popular music, but they are really oldies at this point. Where is the new Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, CSNY, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, Frampton, The Who, Stones, etc.? Why don't people today learn to play their instuments and become musicians and not just performers?

i can respect the old 60's stuff. like in the sunshine of your love ect. but i really prefer the 90's stuff. i'm listening to more weird stuff and listening less 90's alternative but i still enjoy the ideals and other stuff that has been forgotten. rock music now is just pushing trends to sell records. everyone wants to sound like something else and not being original.. i'll stop rambling i found this cool indie store where records are cheap i'll post it later... have to go. i hope u don't mind my response and it wasn't a private conversation

That pretty well sums up my view of pop music these days. The only guys you will find in my music collection that have put out an album recently (as in last 15 yrs) would be Paul Simon and Tom Petty, and that's pushing the envelope for me. (though, much to his credit, Simon does write his own songs, and the production standards seem very high).

I have stayed far from most pop, sticking mainly with oldies and classical works. I can't stand much Beethoven, and can't get enough of Greig, Holst, Mozart, and Gounod.

I I had to answer BJ's question though, I would say it is because most artists today are overproduced, overhyped, unoriginal, no talent sellouts, including but not exclusively limited to the ones claiming to be just the opposite of all of these. Also, modern recording technology and the ability to edit a recording just as easily as text in a MS Word document mean artists can get away with passing off shitty, unpolished performances as final takes leading to unrealistic, synthesized music. Oh, did i mention that a lot of fancy high tech studio editing equipment can now replace talent? --Cheers,

Joe,

I totaly agree with you. CSNY is awesome. I saw Neil Young live last summer with my dad (which is really crazy because if you talked to the two of us you would never imagine that we would want to go to the same concert in a million years). He's just better than any other modern guitar player, in my opinion. My CD collection is a healthy mix of 60's and 70's rock and more contemporary punk rock...but even my favorite punk rock bands are getting dated. All the new punk acts have sold out and turned into corporate whores. Warped Tour, once a great punk rock festival, has turned into a showcase of teenyboppers.

If you ask me, I think it's corporate radio that's screwing up music. You've got Clear Channel owning damn near every station in every market...you're simply not going to get a healthy selection. Everything is the same. The fat cats in the music industry have a set formula for success in each genre of music and they build bands around that, creating about 50 million acts that all sound exactly the same. Real rock and roll is about sticking it to the man, but you won't hear that on a Clear Channel station, because Clear Channel IS the man!

My take on it is that it's the corporations' search for money that really screwed up the music scene. It used to be that bands would travel on their own for a long time playing in bars & stuff until they got pretty good at playing on their feet before they were "discovered". Today though, anybody who has anything interesting gets a big record deal at 18 or younger before they've had a chance to build up some talent and stamina, and when they get their first big chunk of cash, they don't develop either one of them. Kind of sad, really, but that's just my opinion on it. That's probably why these guys are such babies, too. They haven't had some bartender saying, "you want to play? I'll pay $20, take it or leave it." They can't relate to paying their dues because they haven't had to.

I guess there's always good music out there if you look, but it doesn't seem as common as it used to.

You forgot about Floyd and Zappa, Joe. :D

Anyway, you're completely right, Nobody is even halfway decent anymore, because the industry doesn't give a shit. They can just take some attractive people, who can play a guitar to an extent, give them mohawks, lip rings, and tattos, and call them a success. There is no shortage of 13 year old kids who eat that shit up, head to FYE, and pay 22 dollars for a disc with 12 nearly identical songs on it. If I want to hear good music, I go downstairs, grab Dark Side of the Moon on viynl, fire up the turntable, and relax. It's a shame what's happening, really...

I'm personally staying away from hendrix and all that but i recently gotten into black sabbath. in my opin.. they are almost the best band. and i hear their influence in alot of my records. what i was trying to say was i loved gen x but it was very hollywood very commercial. rock trends don't seem to last more then about 4 yrs. also the new trends in pop music confuse me i thought new trends should build upon the old. very dissapointing to find it was all for cash blah blah

-- X (..@....com), November 14, 2004.

Sabbath was a great band, and its personality changed depending on who the singer was, the ozzy to dio switch was the biggie, IMO. Try Judas Priest or Iron Maiden too, Priest was and is the tops, but they didn't get too much airplay on the radio, most of the songs were too long, but their concerts were packed.

Dead Kennedys, Give me convinience or give me death 7. The Beatles, 1962-1966 compiltion 8. PF, Relics 9. The Clash, The Clash (album) 10. Frank Zappa, Weasels ripped my Flesh.

Of best albulms I'd add

Fleetwood mac - Rumours

If you're into King Crimson, - Discipline

Devo - Freedom of Choice?

AC/DC - back in black

Some Mettalica album - it's tough

Maybe Nirvana

In general, there are a lot of things that aren't the "best ever", but are trend setters, and really deserve mention.

Funnier-than-H@ll song: James McMurty's "Choctaw Bingo". I heard that and have been to a lot of the places he's talking about and see the people he describes as if they were next door. Probably ought to buy his albulm some time.

I don't think I'd put it in the "best ever" section, but I liked Macy Gray's albulm, don't know the name. My wife says she wrote her own songs, and for a first albulm, it's pretty good.
