RM to DAT file, or directly to CD burner for VCD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hello everyone: I have searched the entire database for my query, and spent long hours searching the web as well. I am looking for a direct process to convert RM files into DAT files for Video cd. Currently I take the RM file, convert it into VCD format, and then Nero 6 once again converts the MPG file into (I presume) DAT format for the Cdrom. THAN Nero will finally burn the CD. The RM to MPG conversion takes 1-2 hours, and then the Nero burning conversion takes another hour. (1 hour video file) I was hoping to cut out one of these conversion steps. It seems a waste to be doing a double conversion in this manner. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really do not know why Nero 6 is taking so long to burn. As I understand it, a DAT file is simply an MPG with some extra header information in the file. My MPG files are VCD compliant. I have used EOvideo, RM Converter, TMPgen and one other I can't recall off hand. (in an effort to find the quickest method) My computer is XP on an AMD2.4 ghz and 1 gig memory system. Thanks to everyone for their time. -Kerry

If Nero is taking so long, it is re-encoding your MPEG files. Whatever you are doing to convert RM to MPEG-1 is not correct or Nero would not try to re-encode it. http://www.dvdrhelp.com has some conversion guides that might help you. If TMPGenc understands how to convert RM, I would recommend using it. Make sure your MPEG-1 video after conversion is valid for VCD. Your output might have an invalid resolution or bit rate, which is why Nero is trying to convert it. Nero should not take an hour to burn unless you are burning at 1x speed. My guess is that it is not really taking an hour to burn, that Nero is spending this time doing conversion of your video. You are correct that a DAT file is simply a MPEG-1 file with some extra header information.

I would guess that your files are simply of the wrong resolution. RM files tend to be optimized for website viewing - something like 160x100.

EOVideo is an excellent converter, and I've used it to sucessfully convert RM files to something more useable. You'll need to follow the VCD specification exactly, or as Root stated, Nero will try and re- code your files.

Thank you to everyone. I gave up on Nero and am using HA Cd burner. Ha will almost immediatly start writing to my CD burner with the exact same file that NERO converts. Who knows why Nero is converting. I used TMPGen, and my Video cards PVR program as well and select the VCD option and save to mpeg, but once again Nero does not like it. Anyhow I have given up on Nero. When HA is finished my VCD play fine on my DVD house player, so I assume things are correct. -Kerry

Not surprising. Nero is bad about recoding video. I've had it re-do some of the things I knew were VCD compliant (Ouput from EazyVCD) with no explanation.
