Decoder for twin coil switch machines

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Wiring for DCC : One Thread

I am thinking about using accessory decoders to control several twin coil (NJ International) switch machines and want to know if anyone has a favorite decoder that has the capacity to run those machines. I have read that you have to use a good power source, but I haven't been able to find a decoder that will work. I have an NCE system but the accessory decoder they make, Snap-It, will not do the job. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Joey,

The Digitrax DS-54 is supposed to be able to drive a twin coil machine. I think the CVP AD4H can also drive a twin coil machine. I don't use twin coil machines so I cannot attest to how well these do the job.

Joey,

you may want to check out the Zimo MX82 decoder.

NCE Snap-It is designed for twin coil machines too.

On Tony's Train Exchange website, there is a comparison test of all switch machines using exactly this switch machine. The results show that the Teamdigital SMD8 (and for this purpose equivalently the SMD2) handle this machine very well. From my personal experience, I can strongly recommend the SMD2 and SMD8.
