CTC Signals: Doll Arms with small blue light

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I need some help in locating some info. that is in the Society's messages about the "Doll Arm" that is affixed to the shaft of a CTC signal mast, and positioned to the right of the CTC signals. The Doll Arm has a small signal light about the size of a tea cup, with a bright (neon) blue light. The previous post messages indicated the purpose and sections of the rule books that applied to the Doll Arm light.

As I recall, the Doll Arm light was used to indicate that a track intervened between the CTC Signal Light and the track switch that it controlled, or something similar.

Thanks for the help! I know that the info. is hidden somewhere in one of the various posts, but I haven't been able to find it!

Concerning doll signals, I've never seen additional doll "arms" if more than one track is between the signal and the track it governs. However, I have seen additional doll signal lights placed on the same arm. For example, I have a photo of a signal where two tracks are between the signal and the CTC track--there are two doll signals on the same arm. I'm happy to send the photo if you'd like to see it.

aaron, I can't find the posting you want but Rule 296 of the CSXT Operating Procedures Manual (effective March 15, 1996) discusses the so-called Doll Arm. The rule explanation reads: "A track intervenes between the signal and the track governed by the signal. When more than one track intervenes, the number of doll arms, with or without blue lights, is correspondingly increased." maybe this helps.
