Hello there :) I have a few movies that are in avi format, but when I try to split or convert them, neither TMPGenc nor Virtual dub support them. They are in xvid format which both programs tell me are not supported. Is there a way to convert these avis into divx or, better still, is there any good freeware out there that accepts this format so I can convert the files to mpeg and then burn to a VCD?. I really hope you guys can help me out because both movies kick booty!! Thanks for your time, Peace....DJ Brujo

That's really a two-step process, one for audio and one for video. This guide:

Is for Divx with subtitles, but it should work ok for Xvid with no subtitles.
