Go Cart Help...too much power????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

HI! My friend and I are building a go cart. We have a frame and everything, but the only "spare" engine I have that runs right now is a 13.5hp. Horizontal shaft off an old lawn mower. The problems are... All of the axles we found can only handle up to 10 horse, any ideas, and also the mounting plate on the motor is not a normal setup. It has avery wide plate with large holes. The mounting plate on the go cart is set up for the standard dimensions.ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP!!!! We are on a VERY low budget and ANY links for discounted parts or "junk" would be appreciated. THANKS!!!! JOsh

make your own mounting plate out of some 5mm or more plating and weld that on to the frame im sure an axle that should only meant to take 10 horse probably could take a 13.5 horse they usually have a safety factor or something you could go to a steel works and get a 1 1/2 inch hard steel solid bar but the you would have to get new beraings and new hubs which could be quite expensive
