Do VCD's have Region Codes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I found your VDD website today. Great Site!

Congratulations, you get to receive my dumb question.

Do VCD's have region codes like DVD's? This is one of those "settle an argument" questions.

Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

VCDs do not have region codes.

The only real problem is that a lot of commercial VCDs are PAL. If you can only play NTSC video, they wouldn't work. Most modern cheapie DVD players and just about every computer player will play them fine.

Almost all PAL equipment (VCD, TV, VHS, etc) can play NTSC just fine. Unfortunately, most NTSC equiment cannot handle PAL. Fortunately, I live in a PAL area. ;-)

Now, this doesn't help those of you living in North America and Japan. But it means, if you want maximum compatability, burn your VCDs in NTSC format. I myself don't follow that advice because PAL has slightly higher resolution and better picture quality. I also do not have to worry about NTSC's odd 29.97 Hz frame rate. :)
