Labral Tear Repair surgery in Right Shoulder

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Joints : One Thread

I will be going through a labral tear repair in my right shoulder next week in NewYork city. It was a traumatic accident, lifiting weight and losing my balance.

I would love to hear from someone who has gone through this type of surgery. Any tips on pre and post surgery would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Yes, I had the exact injury as you and had surgery on it a month ago. I just started physical therapy. Once you start getting your full range of motion back your shoulder strength comes back quickly. However, I won't be able to lift weights heavily for another 4-5 months. The after surgery is to keep your shoulder completely still for at least 3 weeks.

Hi, I was just searching the web for information on labral tears. I had a repetitive work injury a year ago. I finally got to see a surgeon and they found the labral tear. The surgeon said the surgery was up to me and that there was a 50/50 chance that it would be slightly better or made worse. I would like any information about your experience with this surgery or a surgeon I could consult. All the information on the web makes it sound like surgery would get me back to pre-injury state. However, I have seen the top shoulder surgeon in Saskatchewan, Canada and he doesn't sound to optimistic. I certainly don't want to be made worse, but I don't know how management of this injury could still give me a high degree of funtionality of my shoulder, if I avoid surgery. Thanks I would appreciate any info.

I had the same surgery 2 years ago and in Aug. 2004 I needed a second sugery because the "bioabsorbable" tack used to fix my tear broke, floated around my joint, imbedded into my bone and caused severe damage which now will lead to a shoulder replacement later in life. My advice to anyone is to ask as many questions as possible about the product they will be using. It maybe bioabsorbable, but a year and a half later, mine never absorbed.Be very hesitant, you don`t want to end up with my problems.
