Old Otis Elevator O-type door operator

The door operator on my Otis Elevator from the 30s or early 40s just went bust. Otis informs me that the part can't be found and I will have to get a whole new door assembly. I'll need the gearbox, chain, chain follower and electrics that go with it. Is there any hope of finding this?

A new operator shouldn't cost more than $5000 installed. Why put junk back together even if you could.

The O operator wasnt junk in its day, and she certainly got her money's worth out of it. My advice would be to do a door modernization... Call around and get bids... Unless your bound by your contract with OTIS... If so, cancel your contract and get bids on a door mod...

We've been quoted $8000 and a six-week turnaround time. Both of these factors are a problem. This is the only elevator in a historic hotel. If I could replace the old part, the elevator would be operable while we go after a better solution.

My only other suggestion would be to have to gear box removed, and all the other worn parts taken to a really good machine shop. But your looking at some serious money for a shop that can remanufacture those parts, and not all machine shops have that talent. Your looking at about the same down time. 8K sounds high for a door mod.

Hi There Is it a ac or dc O operator, the ac operator had a brake shoe to stop the operator when open, I might have one. What broke on it, where are you, contact me elevator555@hotmail.com

Call Schindler or Kone and ask them for pricing on a MAC/EZ door operator it the best stand alone operator on the market and can be installed and wired on most cars in less the 5 days. Don't get bullied into buying a GAL or an OTIS GAL copy it can't handle the weight of your doors too much Aluminum parts, MAC/EZ is all steel and parts are readily available from Schindler, Kone, Wittur or MAC. When I installed them a few years back they were going for $4800, they shouldn't have gone up that much in price. Plus you'll get the best quality product available.

what's wrong with it? I know the 'o' most things can be bought, modified, or repaired so what's broken?

Me thinks MOLE might have worked (or still does) work for the big O....if we have a problem with one we send it to our local repairer who rebuilds them in a couple of days...mind u there are fewer left as most of the junk that old has been modernised

The six weeks is undoubtly to get the parts ordered and to do the job plus extra time just in case. But sure once you have the parts 3 days max.

We've been working on getting the elevator door operator repaired.Just yesterday we found out that it is actually a 7300 assembly rather than an O operator. (An elevator technichian told us it was an O operator, but a more experienced one says it's the 7300 assembly.) Apparently there is some hope for getting the parts to that - our local Otis man will let us know what he can do about that by the end of the week. If I find out then that some parts are still unavailable, I will post it here.

I am absolutly gobsmaked...speechless and all that type of cliches...if a technician cant tell the differance between an O operater and a 7300.. I cant say in this forum what I really think of him....but in nice langauge (but he says....REALLY holding his tongue)...Its like mistaking a Toyota for a Ford and if you dont get that well you are the same as the original technician...

I agree dayle, the 7300 parts ie; motor& gearbox unit, chain, spocket end pin can be obtained from Otis or LCL (who are owned by Otis)they will not sell you a damper unit, but this can be repaired at a good work shop. However the 7300 no longer meets certain door codes, but the 7300 was replaced with the 9950 door operator around 1986 and a mod kit is available and should not take longer than 16 hours to fit. The latest version has a dynamic brake board to slow down just before full open & close to give a smoother stop. But there are other companies who can give better performance at the same or cheaper price ie; sematic,siemans,selcon,witter to just name a few.....

First thing I would tell any new helper is to learn the nomenclature for the equipment out there. you don't have to know how it works, But at the coffee shop at least you sound like you know what your talking about. The 7300 has done its job,the leaking, cold weather sensitive dinosaur. Time to upgrade to a closed loop operator. then if you decide on a modernization your a door operator ahead of the game
