Could you please help me with this question?

Would a gene that must be paired with another gene just like itself to determine the phenotype be known as the heterozygous gene?

Thank you.

It would be a recessive gene. One must be homozygous for a recessive gene for it to be expressed in the phenotype.

Thanks for the reply to the gene pairng. I seem to be having a little difficulty understanding the relationship and division of genes.

Is there any book that would explain things a little better for me as the text book I have doesn't seem to go into a lot of detail about pairing.

One more question. Is it true that parents share half as many genes with their children as they do with their parents?

Forgive me for asking such simple questions, but I have just started a course in psychoogy and am overwhelmed . Thanks. Mary
