Is my player converting PAL to NTSC?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a Panasonic F65 dvd player, and a JVC i'art 27" NTSC TV. I was under the impression that playing PAL VCDs would result in scanlines being cropped off. However comparing the same frames on my DVD player/tv and when using windows media player, it is apparent that the image my dvd player output to my TV has not been cropped.

The VCDs in question are the malaysian star wars trilogy.

How is this possible?

1) It could be that your VCDs are actually NTSC, but I'm not sure. You can download the free Bit Rate Viewer from http://www.tecoltd.com and if it says you have 25 frames per second, it's PAL. Anything else is NTSC. 2) PAL VCD resolution is 352x288. It could be that your TV is capable of displaying 288 lines but to be honest with you, I don't know what NTSC TV resolutions are, so this is only a guess.
