Obituary

I may be off topic here, but so be it. I, along with many others in the rail community, lost a dear friend in the recent passing of Paul Merriman of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Paul nd I go back to the late 1950's when we both were chasing Gainesville Midland Decapods up and down the right-of-way between Gainesville and Athens, Ga. With his hard work and purchasing ex-Southern Railway steam locomotive No. 4501, Paul personally convinced Southern Railway, and later Norfolk Southern, of the public relations value of running steam excursion trains for the public. One of the highlightsf my railroad career has to be my association with Paul Merriman. As long as we are anble to hear the mournful sound of a locomotive steam whistle, Paul Merriman will still be among us.
