I want to understand the theory about counterpoint. I like to know a good textbook on the subject, but it must also be a practical, because I also want to experiment with it.

This is probably out of print...but Eric Rollinson's Elementary Harmony and Counterpoint is a short and very useful book, which got me through my counterpoint exams. It was originally published by the Frederick Harris Music Company in Ontario, Canada.
