Building Graeme King's Kingfisher Rowing Shell : LUSENET : Open-water rowing : One Thread

Graeme King once provided a kit for building his Kingfisher, a 22'6" Plywood Single Recreational Shell. I can not find the whereabouts of Mr. King or one of his kits. Can you direct me to him or to where I can purchase a kit for the Kingfisher?

Thank you,

Mark Ropers

King Boat works in Vermont used to sell a kit, maybe they still do. Here's the number I was given a few years ago: King Boat Works 802 387 5373. I'm currently building Ken Basset's "Firefly" which is shaping up to be a very nice hull. Will fit it with a Piantedosi rigger. Thanks to everyone who provided information about this design. More questions to follow. Doug

Dear Mark,

The plans for Kingfisher have long been available from WoodenBoat Magazine. Perhaps they also know where you can buy a kit. For plans contact They also sell plans for Ken Bassett's Liz.

woodenboat not only sells the plans but they have 3 back issues that describe the building process in pretty good detail. I ordered them specifically for those articles...

they sell the back issues for about $5 each or 5 for $20 each..... so have a look through their index might be some row boats that catch your fancy... ie Adirnodack guide boats etc...

I built the Kingfisher from plans purchased at the WoodenBoat Store. The most difficult part of the project is fabricating the sliding seat and riggers, which I purchased from Graeme King. Unless Graeme will supply these items, I would suggest looking at another design.

I rowed the boat for a year before moving on to a flat water single. The boat is beautifully designed and was always a crowd pleaser.

I recently completed a Kingfisher and launched it a few days ago. Graeme King provided the complete kit. That's not to say it wasn't a challenge to assemble. I am very pleased with the final product.

I'm busy with the last work in building the Kingfisher. Hope to launch it soon. Are there more builders, perhaps in Europe, special Holland?
