how to build a go cart with an 11 hp horizontal shaft engine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

i have recantly aquired an 11hp horizontal shafted engine and a gear box with forward neutral and reverse. These are linked with a belt drive and are both off a tractor mower. should i change the size of the pulleys and make it faster and have a belt tensioning clutch or should i get rid of the gear box put a centrifugal clutch on the shaft and run a chain straight from the engine to the axle

Did the gearbox have no clutch? That would be odd. Make sure if you put another clutch on that it's rated for 11hp or more, and chain drive it. Or try the tensioned belt idea - it's what I'm using, but for a bit less hp. Go hard.

I would use the chain drive with a centrifugal clutch & use a small back sprocket.
