foreign-educate nurses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Transcultural Nursing : One Thread

I am researching the challenges foreign-educated nurses face while acculturating to the U.S. culture of nursing. My interest is in examples of actual stories highlighting these challenges, particulaly stories showing the impact on patient care, staff relationships with each other and with managers. thank you

The CGFNS began in the late 1970s as a result of the increase in foreign nurse migration to the United States in the late '60s. CGFNS was established to ensure that foreign nurses who wanted to practice in the United States were properly licensed. Today, the CGFNS exam is required by more than 85 percent of U.S. state boards of nursing. CGFNS offers a variety of services under its four divisions, including a visa assessment; a credentials review of the nurse's education, registration and licensure; a qualifying exam testing nursing knowledge; and an English language proficiency exam.
