DCC install in Kato RSC-2

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I recently purchased three SAL Kato RSC-2 locos (2 numbered, 1 unnumbered) and would like to add Soundtrax or some other sound decoder. Is this an easy plug in or is it more involved. Also, since they haven't been out of the box, are they a good running loco?

Larry, I've installed a Soundtraxx unit in one of my RSC-2. It definately is not a plug and play as some minor surgery must be done in the cab area. I don't have the loco in front of me but if you are really interested e-mail me afteer the holidays and I'll see if I can't guide you through the process. And boy does that Alco sound great when it cranks up. John

They run very well. I haven't installed a sound decoder - given the narrow hood, I think you're going to have a tough time finding a speaker that will fit, and that will sound good. I used the NCE plug n play decoders and they work very well with the units - plug right into the circuit board.
