avi to vcd in 1 cd

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi! I'm a beguinner with the tmpgenc and there are many things I still don't know. I can convert an avi movie to vcd, but my problem is that I can't get the resultant vcd file to fit into only 1 cd. I've tried it but on the tmpgenc, when I change the bitrate from 1150 to 890 aprox, it indicates that the file will fit but when I start converting instead of making the file smaller to fit in 1 cd, it gets bigger to around 1 giga. Any help will be apreciated, thanks.

I don't know why you're having problems because what you want to do should work, but you'll have to make a non-standard VCD to drop the bit rate. You are going to sacrifice a lot of quality dropping the bit rate like that and VCD isn't that great to begin with. You may be VERY unhappy with video at a bit rate of 890. CD-Rs are pretty cheap, so why not just make regular VCDs? However, I suppose you might want to check out the KVCD format. I've never done it and I can not comment on whether it's any good or not. You can get info at http://www.kvcd.org. KVCD is a non-standard variation on VCD that plays with GOP frames to achieve longer than normal recording times. I can not guarantee that such discs will play on standalone DVD players. I have no idea if the video quality is any good or not. Good luck.

Quim, I´m working with vcd´s for about six months and found, was the guy that wrote for you back, that the bitrate you sugested (890) will generat lest benefits because vcd´s have to be encoded using 1150 bitrate, - and i will not talk about the resulting qualite. My sugest is that, for a 1 cd movie type that can run on regular player burn and DVD midia with a DVD player, and than you will have some satisfation. By the way, the solution of your problem is this: vcd´s will be as big as the time leght of your movie file.
