The trouble with this question, as frequently asked as it is, is that there is nothing definitive that anyone can provide. There are those who speculate that it was rabies who killed him, others that he was drugged, and still others that there was a plot to have him beaten to death. Mr. Poe was discovered on the morning of October the 3rd, 1849 in a gutter on a street in Baltimore, and from there was taken to Washington College Hospital where the physician Dr. Moran simply stated that he had "lesions" on the brain (although Moran had believed Poe to have been mugged). Poe continued to come in and out of conciousness, until he finally died on the 7th of October, 1849. His last words are believed to be "Lord, help my poor soul." I am sorry that there is no certain answer for this question; we must be content without knowing what precisely caused his death.
