Ok Gents, here is a way to EASILY master the Mil Dot scope. Go to SWFA or anywhere that has one and buy a MilDot Master. It is like an EASY to use slide rule. You take a known size of target, like a full size man is 20 inches across the chest, measure how many mils it takes to cover this size, slide the number of mils to the 20in mark and there you are, look at the range scale on the right at the big black pointer and there is your range. When using this system I am within 3 yards average when compared to a Laser range finder! And it can tell you hold over in mils,, or clicks, and up-down angle!!!!

Shoot streight and tell the truth!

Now this is a good question, PS the intend behind the Mildot is military use as a mils is equal to 1 meter at 1 km.... perfect if you are familiar with metric system....

Also this provides quick correlation with the compass 6400mils…. Or 6.4km at 1000m (1Km) circle

PS we use a Leupold Mark 4, power 16X on our sniper rifle now this scope is awesome…. The only improvement they could ever do on it is the reticule patterns dots could be empty with a very fine dot in the middle to easy fine compensation….. as you can see on some nightforce (with power 15X….) which is a downfall (15X) it may not seem like a lot but if your to use this on a sniper rifle .50 cal it’s a must 16X…..

Well you have a nice day.

If your interested in how to use the mil-dot system try the free download at Shooter ready. It is a range simulator with a mil-dot sight and even shows how to do the range estimations. Fun once you get the hang of it. As far as actual field use, the mil-dot system is a lot like an old fashioned typewriter. It's reliable, but somewhat out of date. There are some good quality scopes already pre-dailed with range and elevation info in the form of multiple crosshairs, set specifically for the caliber used. I would reccomend the Springfield Armory and Barrett scope lines, in .308 and .50 cal respectively. The Barrett model 32 is nice because it even indicates 5 and 10 mph windage adjustments out to 2000 yards. Hope this helps.....

mildot is a type of rectical inside the scope and yes I have used them and if you know how to estimate range with a mildot rectical then they are great, almost every scope brand has scopes with mildot recticals or if you already have a good scope you can get a mildot rectical fitted in there for about $100 US.mildot is a type of rectical inside the scope and yes I have used them and if you know how to estimate range with a mildot rectical then they are great, almost every scope brand has scopes with mildot recticals or if you already have a good scope you can get a mildot rectical fitted in there for about $100 US.
