What is the youngest age that anyone has been diagnosed with AVN?

In our group, the ON/AVN Support Group International, we have more than 6,000 members from more than 20 countries all over the world. Believe it or not, about 3 years ago, we had a parent contact us about a baby girl, aged 18 months, who had Avascular necrosis of both hips. The doctors had no idea why this happened to this baby, and it was not LCP (Legg Cavles Perthes, the childhood condition that often leads to AVN of the hips). Also, I have heard from other paretns whose children ranged in age from 5 years old on up, but these are extremely rare.

Today, it seems that more people in their late teens and twenties are being diagnosed with AVN than there were just a year or so ago. The number of new members in that age group is positively frightening, as far as I am concerned. Not so long ago, the 40 - 50 age group was the largest in size, but today that seems to be changing rapidly. Perhaps our group is getting the word out about AVN, and more doctors are actively looking for signs of it. My son Austin was dx with perthes' disease last april. He is now 4 years old, and we just found out yesterday 3/15/04 that he may need sugery in the next 2 months. Now I'm totally confused.First the doctors say that it should heal on it's own because he's so young. well, now 4 months later we're talking surery. To my knowledge more and more young children are being dx.
