Best way to find an answer to such questions is to read the book and the material he used to illustrate the stages of development. No doubt the theory came largely from clinical observation, and also in part from finding Freud's theories inadequate for the explanation of life-span development. When asking about how a clinician develops theories, it is generally important to ask (1) were there issues in his or her life to which the theory speaks? (2) did he or she work with a particular client population whose issues are addressed by the theories? (3) were there issues in the larger culture which the theory seeks to address? Erik Erikson also addressed some interesting historical issues in Young Man Luther.
