arm and hand position

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread

One thing I'm struggling with is that I'm 59 and just returning to the piano after 30+ years in business. My hand and arm positions are, I suspect, adversely affected by using a PC keyboard, and I find I have a lot of tension in my shoulders and that my wrists tend to drop and get "locked." What's the best way to find something which can guide me in how to improve my hand, arm, and body position? Are there any exercises which might be productive? I'd be grateful for any help or pointers. Many thanks. PS: I tried to send this as question but the email came back as undeliverable. PPS: many of the tips on this site are very useful to non-pianists...I printed off the main pages for my clarinet-playing friend.

Hello, Congratulations on your decision to return to piano! Find an academically qualified teacher who enjoys working with adult students. The reason I said academically qualified is because instruction on arm, hand and wrist position should be taught by a teacher who know how to teach this subject whether to a young student or to an adult. Next believe in yourself, with a good teacher you will do fine! Good Luck!
