*.dat to *.avi (not the CD-R dat file)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Here's the problem: I have a bunch of small videos (you know, little comical home-video shorts) that I have downloaded from K++, and for some reason, K++ was acting up, and it didnt change the output files from *.dat's to *.avi's when they completed. I have long since gotten rid of the p2p and got a new one that works, but im still stuck with like 9 dat files that can only be viewed in AVIPreview. Anyway, I am looking for a way to convert these temporary p2p dat files into avi's or mpegs to burn to VCD. I dont want to buy anything just for 9 video shorts, so does anyone know of a way to convert dats to avis without the aid of a program, but if one is needed, please tell me if it is freeware, and where I can get it. Thanks in advance. And be sure to check out the Animes board where I am most of the time.

Try TMPGenc at http://www.tmpgenc.net. http://www.vcdhelp.com has some conversion guides that may help you.

i had a similar problem but if u open the folder that your files are in then go into folder options and show file extention eg dat then click on the file and instead of file.dat change the dat to avi so file.avi dont know whether it was a fluke but it worked for me

mpegtool will convert dat to mpeg-1, works rather well. try a search for the software, as it appears the author is inaccessible. i seem to recall that filename was something like mpegtool16.exe...or something like that. there was another program by that name--apparently unrelated?--but this is a single tool, might find it on the hitach site or one of the other japanese software sites...

Looks like it's hard to find a video converter from .dat to avi What you can do is convert first the .dat file to mpeg using vcdgear free @ vcdgear.com and then start from there.

Yea, I'd agree with the previous post. I had the same problem. Kazaa lite just wouldn't convert for me. So, I went into folder options, and under "view", unclick the square saying "Hide extensions for unknown types". It'll show you the 43253654688 with the dat extension, just rename it to 43253654688.avi, or whatever the format it is suppose to be in and voila, simple. Cheers.

Also, converting it to mpeg using TMPgenc isn't always a good idea. I tried that and my 59 mb file became 216 mb. Not very good if you want to conserve space. Cheers.
