Modeling the Southern : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I have done some major planning and I have room for a 2 layer layout in about a 12x20 foot space. My main yard I have done right now has a 4 tracks for passenger trains and a 5-6 tracks for fright. A 6 stall round house. I am looking for places on the system that had some coal mining. I have a place on the second level for a 3 track coal mine. And maybe a intrechange with the N&W. I am looking at system maps and I don't know what line to model. I am into steam and desel operations. I have a 4-8-2 2-8-2(4501)2-8-0. SD-35 SD-24 E-6 E-7 E-8 RS-2. Will a small line of the Pedimont work for me?

Around halloween every year, the "5-6 tracks for fright" should really be interesting.

...Sorry, ...I couldn't resist. ....Actually, I am about to take on a similar endeavor in a few months. Should be interesting.

I am about to model the Southern (St. Louis Division). I know there are a lot of coal mines, Auto and auto parts but I do not know the system map. Do either of you have any links to detailed Southern Ry system maps?

A partial map can be found at (North Carolina, East TN) - a more complete map is found on the inside of the cover of the book: Southern, A Motive Power Pictorial, 1968-1982 - it includes the entire system as of 1975. I am pretty sure I have seen a complete map online, if I remember where I will post it.

A more complete map, still not the one I seem to remember.
