Pigs and Pigging

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACountryPlace : One Thread

Well our first sow had her first litter. I would like to hear anybody's experiences with pigs giving birth. Mine laid on four. I have one living. I am learning. These are my questions. Did you use a farrowing crate? Is there anyone who used a larger pen? What are the specific reasons for using farrowing crates. In the wild, they seem to make it extremely well. I am just rying to solve my problem.

My experience has been that their first litter they are more careful about their babies and it goes downhill after that. You should probably get rid of her if you want piglets in the future. Get a breed that has good mothering instincts to begin with. Short of that, build a shelter where the babies can escape where mom can't go. Don't personally have experience with a crate and think it might work for your situation.

Here's a link for a good pasture farrowing hut. http://www.pfi.iastate.edu/E-HUT Farrowing Pix.htm
