The PS2 does not play VCDs (commercial and homemade) nor CD-R/CD-RW.

There has not been a chip made to allow PS2 to play VCD yet, but if you have a PS1 kicking about somewhere, you can get them chipped (either internal or external) and they are able to play VCD 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, but I'm not sure about the CDRW format.

If you have the PS1 modified to play VCDs, it can invalidate your warranty (unless your console is several years old, of course).
