mini bike chopper engine?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

With all the junkyrad wars and USA Chopper shows my friend and I decided to make a mini chopper. Well a few is more like it. Now the question I have is this. Being like Tim "the tool man" Taylor, I want more power. Now I have a chance to pick up a 340cc Kohler engine and I was wondering how I would connect it to my rear wheel? What type of drive it uses? What type of speed am I looking at from a 28HP engine? Any replies would be appreciated.

THE ANSWER THE THAT QUESTION IS TO GET THAT ENGINE AND SHOVE IT STRIAT UP YOUR ASS!!!!!! STICK WIT A GOAL CART MOTOR COCK SUCKER...

well josh, your no help... it seems you can't even spell... joe what kind of system do you have now??? are there any race kart places near you... they always have idea's... myself, i think it's over kill...

-- tony wood (meflamout@grapevine.net), July 14, 2003.

i was wondering if you could send me pics and plans for a mini chopper. what did you use for a back wheel and tire.

-- Ryan Arvidson (go4 gin347@hotmail.com), July 16, 2003.

More poser is never to over kill, I don't know to much about Kohler motors but from my experience the hp only reflects how fast you get to top speed, speed is based on the RPM of the motor. See you could have your 28HP motor but I could have a high revving Briggs and still beat you. As far as getting the power to the back tire find out if you can mount a comet torqe-a-verter to your motor it the most practical clutch you can use. www.comet-oem.com www.mini- choppers.com

-- John (john@mini-choppers.com), July 17, 2003.

Power not Poser, The only poser is josh w/ the 28hp motor up his ass

-- John (john@mini-choppers.com), July 17, 2003.

Fucking Bullshit. I am seriously pissed off at you guys. This forum ahs gone WAY overboard and off topic and I am done with it. "28HP engine"???? ARE YOU SERIOUS!!??? you are not gonna get near enough power from that crap... GOOD BYE!!!

-- an original member of this forum... (toolmaster999@email.com), July 20, 2003.

what you need to do is check out azusa-eng.com they have everything you need to send the power to the wheel and the stuff you need to stop it i would suggest finding a smaller moter but if not maybe a torq converter.

-- brad (bradwinnv@sbcglobal.net), July 22, 2003.

I have just resently built a mini chopper and i found that a honda gs 162 cc ohc engine from a pressure washer will make my chop' do a solid 45 mph. I am using an artic cat mini bike frame for my base, so i still have the stock salsbury clutch system. the engine is rated at 5 horse power. as far as making the rear tire of your mini chopper get 28 ponies you might look into some late 60's to mid 70's snow machines they should have the clutches that will work with your kholer.

-- R.W.Dietrich (phattroost@yahoo.com), July 30, 2003.

Well all, thanks for the help and allot of needless comments. We ended up going with a 8hp Kohler and a 3.5hp Brigss. One on each chopper for the people who don't get it. We used a comet torq-a- verter, and a live axle kit to get the rear moving.

-- joe riv (kre8tve1@yahoo.com), August 04, 2003.

going 45mph sounds fun until you eat it on asphalt.

Can u send me some plans for a mini chopper because i have been wanting to build one and can u send me pics of your mini chopper?

-- Jake Jones (wyldeboy2@yahoo.com), August 19, 2003.

I am putting a website together now to advertise my business, White Trash Choppers. Do yourself a favor and forget the 28hp motor. Use a briggs 5hp and modify it with parts from American Power Sports. There is not much needed to top out at 40mph, but your parts need to be matched well. If you put a sprocket on that is too small, the bike will have big top speed, but you may need a hill to get it there. If you put too large of a sprocket on it, the top end will suffer, but you will get there in a hurry. If it were up to me, I would put a large sprocket on it and get some power off the line. chop on.

-- nick bernardo (gemilyb@juno.com), October 01, 2003.

I hope this helps guys. I've been doing alot of research and most of the guys that charge $5K for their choppers just use regular 10" aluminum golf cart wheels with a 205/50-10 goodyear tire on it(for the rear, the hub has to be purchased from www.mfgsupply.com and the axle bearing kit from www.bmikarts.com). Its a real nice setup for the rear tire, and it resembles the full size 250 series wheel and tire setup best. I think the Rupp style 10" wheel can look nice for the front, but any wheel of choice will work as long as it's not that much smaller and skinnier than the rear tire. I've seen some mini choppers that use 6" rear tires, but the frame may be too big or the tire too tall or too fat or too skinny. The hardest part of building a chopper is the damn frame. Yeah its possible to use frames from mini bikes but if you want it to be a real chopper thats what you'll have to do: chop it! They sell mini chopper parts on ebay, your'e lucky to get a good deal because this stuff sells at high prices. Your best bet on a frame is a yerf dog frame. It resembles the chopper frame best and its the one used on the BMI Karts website. The best all-out custom chopper frame is most likely gonna be custom made and they sell on ebay at ridiculous prices. If you wanna build a budget (rigid) mini chopper, buy a yerf dog and change the wheels and tires out. You'll be spending about $1500 less than other places on the web (and i believe they come with a torque converter with a decent size motor [i believe between 4 to 5.5hp]). Heres a small list of sites that offer parts that can be used for a mini chopper (that won't cost you an arm and a leg). By the way, The forks or "front end assembly" also run expensive. Your best bet is having a local muffler shop build you one with some scrap metal. www.bmikarts.com www.mfgsupply.com www.cartstuffdepot.com/wheels__tires__caps

Gather up some ideas from sources like "American Chopper" and "Hot Bike Magazine" and good luck!! I'll keep you guys updated on my progress. JROD

-- Scott Yust (eimotorsports1@yahoo.com), October 13, 2003.

the responce that said something about a small sproket (less teeth) will get you a higher top speed... noooo its the opposite if you have a larger one( more teeth) then it has more area for the chain to transmit power to the wheel.. a smaller one will get you faster exceloration*** look at the gears off a transmition from a car.. not being a prick.. just trying to help... i am also building a mini chopper (i have been wanting to do this waaaaay beofore jesse and American choppers).. and iam not useing a play or anything, just looking at pictures... the only thing that i think will trip me up is the rear wheel asembly....

What type of wheel are you using for the 205/50-10? is the offset centered or does an offset hub center the wheel etc. it is a little confusing what parts you need for that wheel set up to work with sprocket and brakes. Any info would help.

-- fster (fsovinski@abdgroup.com), October 23, 2003.

Sounds like you guy's have got some great ideas. the whole concept of the mini chopper seems to be taking off. That's good for us who sell these bikes. The best part of building a mini chopper is there is no wrong design. As long as it works, and is safe to ride, it's sort of a "rite of passage" to screw things up along the way. -CHOP ON-

I race go-karts and i would use a 5hp briggs and send it to someone who can modify it for you. My dad took a briggs and got 12 hp out of it which is a lot also run it on alchol methane. i have gotten my kart up to 90 mph so briggs are fast also if u use that engine u were thinkin about usin get a belt drive system they were the best and keep it tyte so it cant slip

The 28 Hp may be a little over kill on the mini, but as long as it does the job and it looks good. I am also building a mini and have started with a basic mini from California Custom Mini Bikes. It is as close to the real package as I have been able to find (with the exception for Mobilation bikes). I am installing a Briggs 16 Hp V- Twin. It makes for a tight fit, but it works. The Comet torque converter is the best drive system, but you will need to use the 40 series to handle the higher HP (get ready to spend some bucks). If it's top speed that you want, then remove the governor and install a tach (tachs for small engines can be found at most Auto Meter Dealers). Most Kohler and Briggs 2 cylinder engines top out at about 3000 RPm, but without the governor you can wind them out around a safe 4200. I have already built a custom halfscale model 'T' using this engine and drive system and with the golf cart rear end it runs along at a smooth 45 MPH. I built a JR Dragster for my son 7 years ago using the salsbury drive on an alcohol 5 hp briggs. These have more options for engagement RPM's, but are even more expensive and you will need to get the unit from an Arctic Cat Dealer. Best of luck with the build. The only thing that really matters, is that you are happy with the results.

-- steve (stevemcdonald205@msn.com), November 06, 2003.

To the boy who said he is running 95 MPH on a Briggs, buddy you have been snorting too much octane booster, yes you can get 12 HP From a Briggs, i my self Balance and Blue Print the good ole flathead briggs 5 hp and get 12 hp very easy out of them, but there is no way you can run 95 MPH, come on get real we might be PLUM but we are not Plum Dumb

-- Dale (earnit79@hotmail.com), November 07, 2003.

Dale, I have to stand up for the kid running 95mph I race go-carts(WKA) and if you have the right gear ratio and your engine is capable of turning the right RPM you can get 95mph and MORE. Me personaly I have been clocked at 93mph. To back up my answer when you get a chance go down to the closest kart racing shop and ask for a gear to speed ratio chart which goes by the RPM's your engine is turning. This chart will tell you exactly how fast you can go with your gear ratio and the RPM's your engine is turning. The gearing on mine were 18 teeth on the clutch drum(centrifical) and 58 teeth on the sprocket mouted to the rear axle and my engine(5hp briggs) was turning 6800rpm. I'm not trying to be a jackass or anything but if you really build these engines you should know what the hell they will do so now you are the one who really the one who looks like a dumb-ass because you obviously don't know what the hell you are talking about. If you have any more smart ideas on trying to make someone look like an idiot please email me with the question before you make a fool of yourself on the internet again just like you have now. OH yeah I'f anyone has any question on engines or mini bikes or go-carts you can email me at sjhouston22@hotmail.com I may not have all the answers but I will try to lead you in the right direction with honest answers that I KNOW work.

-- shawn (sjhouston22@hotmail.com), November 08, 2003.

i wanna know where i can get a tranns for a mini chopper. i wanna use a briggs 18 hp motor but it doesnt have high revs and too much hp for torque converter. so i beleve a manual trans is best. looking at some dirtbike engine/trans combo's too.

-- jon k (jonk_250@hotmail.com), November 19, 2003.

I see alot of people asking for blue prints and plans, the way to build you own is from scratch. Start with 1" 13 ga tubing, a stick of 20' will suffice. Come to our site look at pictures, but most fabricators won't just give you plans. It does take some time to perfect these frames so that all components are compatiable with each other. Have all your parts pre- bought so as you go you can see how wide something might be in actuality, or what bracket you may need to make to hold your foot brake pedal on etc. And if you need parts along the way, or decide maybe you need to buy a frame after all... stop by...and see us...

-- Josh (jmbishop05@yahoo.com), December 02, 2003.

the object is to have your chop as light as possible, no? 28HP does sound a bit like overkill, and heavy. What I would like to use is a small aluminum V-twin. Maybe in the 10HP range. Harley style. What's with all these guys asking for plans? If you consider yourself enough of an engineer to build a mini, why not build from scratch and have it totally of your own creation and style? Picking more experienced brains for part compatibility definately has it's place, though. good luck y'all

Me and my cousin are building a mini chopper out of an XR80R. This is good because the tranny and engine are one piece. We cut the head and re-adjusted the rake...also we are using street bike rimas and tires from a wrecked motorcycle in a junkyard. We fabricated our own tank, fenders, swingarm, etc...and modified the frame. we hope to have it finished by the summer

-- adam wrobel (adam722@juno.com), December 10, 2003.

I didn't think the mini chopper thing had gotten so big untill ii started looking for part on the web. I am trying to start building my own soon, getting parts here and there so far i have a three wheeler motor from a honda 185 that i will try to work into it somehow and i think the best answer yet to plans for a frame is to get what u need and start from there and make it all custom. that way you will know what mesurements you will need for mounts and so on. and i don't think using a high HP motor is a bad idea if you know what you need to have the correct pickup and topend.Well good luck to every one and have fun. E-mail me with any suggestions or questinos maybe i can help you and maybee you can help me.

-- M.J. Fontenot (mjf276@yahoo.com), December 14, 2003.

Well guys, glad to see the question spark so many replies and good comments. I don't think the 28hp motor is overkill at all. It all depends on what you want. If you want to see a mini chopper with a 38hp motor look at CMB minibikes. They have a pic of a black chopper built by Fred I think with a 38HP V-twin. So I know it is possible. Hell now I am seeing minichoppers with NOS and Turbos on them. Who knows where it will stop. I am sure someone told them a 280 rear tire for a real bike would not work. So Chop on and let me know what you think.

-- joe riv (kre8tve1@yahoo.com), December 23, 2003.

Everybody's answers are correct rpm and horsepower are both the keys to making your bike the best go to bulldogmotorports.com and check out the new Briggs built engine called the world formula it is an electric start racing engine box stock it is 200 cc and puts out 15 hp runs about 7000 rpm we are currently starting to build a chopper will hopefully be done next 4 weeks check web site for pictures and info

I would like to start off buy saying that danny and his 130 mile an hour dirt bike is bullshit. Now for you joe. Aparently alot of the people on here dont know what they are talking about. Kohler engines are made for working conditions. They normally power small gasoline welders generators, air compressors, etc. They are designed to work under a heavy strain without bogging. They are usually vertical shaft engines. On a bike you have to have a horizontal shaft engine. Kholer engines dont have alot of rpm. Typically the are all around 26-2800 rpms. On 4stroke engines speed doesnt come from horsepower, but from rpms. Horsepower is just for takeoff on four strokes. I would recomend a 13 horse honda with a torque-a-verter.

Ok well this whole "28hp" makes yall sound like idiots. Its a fucking MINI chopper! They sell those things with only 4 HP and they go 40MPH! Hahaha 28 HP can push a 15 foot boat 35mph! Damn, you need to settle down and put no more than a 15 HP. I dont know shit about motorcycles and I know that shit! yall are dumb as dirt

My friend and I enjoy working out in the garage on anything with an engine on it such as the go kart we made and we just rebuit a golf cart. We would like to start on a mini chopper to give us something to do but we do not have much money. We have a 5.5 hp engine and an 80cc kawasaki dirtbike engine that we are rebuilding and would hope to use on a mini chopper. If anyone has some cheap plans PLEASE EMAIL ME!!!!! Thank you.

-- Matt Sykes (biggiefries69@aol.com), July 09, 2004.

can you use parts from a scrap bicycle for a mini chopper???

-- Matt Sykes (biggiefries69@aol.com), July 09, 2004.

Ok, I am tired of all this shit about the 28hp kohler, yes it would be faster IF you geared it right. Now, I own 3 mini's (that I built) and I could answer any question you have so email me. first of all the 28 hp kohler, if it has horizontal shaft use it (if not you really cant) after you have it on your frame and dont know how to make it move, i would recomend a chain drive ( I recomend using a chain stronger that #35 pitch ) oh and by the way forget the tourque converter, bigger sproket on the motor + smaller on the tire = speed ,and with a 28hp I wouldnt worry about boggin it out. please, anyone that wants a serious answer to thier problem from a real hobby mechanic , machinist by trade email me and I will respond

-- ALEX (KOCOGLY@HOTMAIL.COM), July 12, 2004.

Everything I have read here says the same thing. You all want gas machines. Have any of you thought about electric Choppers? A simple 36 or 48v system would do it , and you would have instant power , without the maintence and trouble shooting regularly needed with small engines. I would like to know if any of you would be interested in such a ride . I think it would be more stable on three wheels , but the body could be kept narrow , and all you would have to do is charge it.

-- Henry C (rafter034@mindspring.com), July 13, 2004.

first dude thats a killer motor and you are going to be f-ing flying. run a high performance clutch at the spinndle with chain to a sprocket at the rear wheel

-- Mike (mky2590@aol.com), August 29, 2004.

You people are all retarded right. Comon. 28 HP is plenty of hp for a mini chopper frame. Heres simple instructions. Get a 5 hp tecumseh h50 horizontal engine. The pick up a comet torque a verter and install it with the #41 chail option.

-- nick (tyhockey9@yahoo.com), November 28, 2004.

why ALL OF YOU wouldnt just go with a 110cc 4spd 4stroke that makes 7hp is amazing to me.......

briggs this, techumsa that...... RETARDED..... you still have to buy a clutch/torque o verter...... and your still stuck with 1 GEAR.... GAY

Can anyone "give back to the comunity" and e-mail me some plans, mini bike, chopper, i don't care (preferebly stolen) or a web address. We have to keep the free plan trading alive!!!

Giving back to the community... I think I'm down with that... I am just finishing up my bike... I live in the Philippines and have been here for six years now... over the last 2-3 years i became interested in the mini choppers... I have researched and requested free plans but to no avail... no one is willing... Well, I want anyone who is interested to just send me an email... I will see what I can do to help you all out if your looking for chopper plans and dimensions... I can send pics of my bike and how it is coming along... I run a Honda 5hp... I had the crankshaft machined to fit a japanese scooter clutch... similar setup to the torq-a-verter... also had the jackshaft fabricated... anyway... if you want more details... I would be more than willing to share my thoughts and ideas to all who are interested... I may be able to draw up some plans for you if you send me an email of what your looking for... I always thought riding and building bikes was a brotherhood thing... lets turn the tides...
