Where did the "Big Apples" get their nickname?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

I've been searching for the origin of the "Big Apple" nickname given to the CofG's 4-8-4 steam locomotives. In Prince's book on the Central, he notes that they were nicknamed Big Apples by crews on the western end of the road but I haven't seen a reason why they were given this name. Any clues?
