New kid walking on the first joint instead of hoof

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Just had a baby buck born yesterday at 12:30 seems pretty healthy but when it gets up to walk it walks on its first joints on the front legs instead of his hooves. Does anyone have any idea what this may be or what i can do. Gave him a 1/2 cc of bose. Tonight he has a little diareah but that i figure is more than likely heat stress. Been really hot the last 2 days. He is eating from mom real well, doesnt seem to be in pain just dont know what this is all about.

I haven't had this in goats but once had a foal with similar problem and it cleared up in a couple of weeks without doing a thing. Muscles just weren't developed enough. This may be something like that.Good luck.

We have not seen this in our kids. I heard of someone with the same problem in a calf use duct tape like a splint. The calf got better. Good luck

I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN QUITE A FEW TIMES IN MY GOATS. I MAKE SPINTS OUT OF POPSICLE STICKS AND PUT THEM ON THE WEAK LEGS FOR A WEEK OR SO AND THEY USUSALLY GET BETTER AS LONG AS THEY ARE EATING WELL. I HAVE BEEN GIVING THE PREGNANT DOES SHOTS OF SELENIUM-E AND VITAMIN AD+E EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS AND THE KIDS A SHOT OF SELENIUM THE DAY THEY ARE BORN AND HAVEN'T HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE. IM NOTE SURE IT IS THE ANSWER BUT IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING FOR ME.

Was the kid a twin? Last year we had a set of twins born. One kid was absolutely tiny, maybe two or three pounds, and the other was huge. Because there wasn't enough room in the uterus for the bigger kid, his feet were all curled, and he didn't even stand for a week or two. When he got to where he could stand, we taped his knuckle straight with sports tape, and he was able to walk. He grew out of it just fine in a few weeks.
