I find very helpful Robert Brodie MacLeod's The Persistent Problems of Psychology (Duquesne University Press, 1975) which has a lengthy chapter on The Classic Doctrines of Man: relativistic, materialistic, idealistic, teleological, and religious. That should give you all the tools you need in order to analyze contemporary personality theories.

You might try Leslie Stevenson's little book, _Seven Theories of Human Nature_. It covers Christianity, Freud, Lorenz, Marx, Sartre, Skinner, and Plato.
