In the facility that I work for, they do a type of welding called "reverse polarity" welding. It involved rapidly changing from positive to negative. this causes the weld to form, then a layer of oxidation coats the surface, then the electrode becomes the negative and the oxidation is blasted off by the current traveling out of the aluminum. I am not very familiar with the process, but to the best of my knowledge the system is very expensive. I would be willing to look into it futher though.
