Photos of Psychologists

greenspun.com : LUSENET : History & Theory of Psychology : One Thread

I'm interested in obtaining photographs or drawings of famous psychologists to include on my website for a psychology course that I teach. There is a website (http://www.sonoma.edu/psychology/psychart.html) that has various drawings of psychologists in the public domain but they are all male. I would like to include at least one female, especially Karen Horney. Any ideas of how I may get her photograph without violating copyright laws? I e-mailed the Karen Horney Center and asked permission to use a photo that was on their website but I didn't get a response. Thanks for your help. Cheryl

You'll find a photos of Horney at http://fates.cns.muskingum.edu/~psych/psycweb/history/horney.htm and at http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/horney.html but I cannot speak to the copyright status of these photos. You could simply include a link from your site to one (or both) of these sites so that your student can see it without your having to re-post it on your site. That should keep you clear of legal entanglements (though I am not a lawyer and cannot say with absolute certainty).

With links to other websites, you can easily include other women psychologists: for example

Helene Deutsch at http://www.fembio.org/frauen-biographie/helene- deutsch.shtml

Alexandra Adler at http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2001/01.18/08- adler.html and at http://home.att.net/~HTStein/Page1b.htm

Mary Whiton Calkins at http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Calkins/murchison.htm

Margaret Washburn at http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Washburn/murchison.htm
