I was wondering if anyone has modified their auto-retracting side stand on the F4. I got my new 2002 F4 about 3 months ago, and we get along just fine except for the uneasy feeling of placing the bike on the side stand, not to mention taking the bike off the rear tire center stand.

Yes I felt the same about my side stand so a mate of mine who is a Ducati mechanic told me to fit the 916/748 modified plate that goes from side stand spring to main fixing point. The standard one is a straight metal plate that when the stand is down will only go as far as stand bolt. Modified one is straight with a "U" in the middle to allow plate past bolt thus letting it stay down. I went to local Ducati dealer & got one for a couple of pounds & fitted it no problem.

Wait a minute. 2002s don't have the auto-retracting side stand, right? As for the side stand being flimsy, I worry about that too. Wish someone would machine an aftermarket side stand that was sturdy. Hint, hint to anyone who has the ability.

I felt exactly the same as you regarding self retacting side stand. To me it wasn't a matter of "if" the bike was going to fall over, it was "when" the bike was going to fall over. Initially I just bent the original bracket which fits between the pin and the springs into a "C" shape. This worked well but the bending process caused some slight cracking on the outer edge of the bracket. I thought there was a risk of corrosion and subsequent failure of the bracket so I then bought and fitted the 748/996 bracket that Tony mentions. I did have to do a little filing on the Ducati bracket in order to get it to extend forward enough when the sidestand was down.

I felt the same way about the side stand. However, MV sells the stand which does NOT retract automatically. I bought it for $9.95. It's tough to get, it took a while, but it was well worth the ten bucks. I highly recommend it.

hello fellas, i have just finnished a solid stainless steel side stand for my mv, it weighs a little bit more than the stock one but must be 20 times stronger. with the materials, machining costs and my time bending the offset, fitting stops and spring mounts then finnally polishing its probably cost me £250, a lot less than the bike laying on the floor, but we should not need to do these mods on a bike of the mv quality, further to that after suffering bad feuliing at low revs since i bought the bike, and the dealer telling me it has had a full service and the C0 was perfect i purchsaesd a C0 monitor of my own, low and behold C0 at 1.5%---reset to 5% as some of you guys suggested 95% better bike, next job that bloody useless back brake, any suggestions ? I can put some pictutes of the side stand on the site but dont know how to regards andy, england

I bended the little spring holder in a "c" shape arround the bolt. I does the job for free. You just need to remove the lower fearing and a small harmer.
