What are A- and S-lines as spoken about in discssions of speciic ralroads?

-- Clarence Donnelly Copeland (doodlebugcope@wmconnct.com), May 14, 2003

This usually refers to the former ACL ("A line") and SAL ("S line") mains from Richmond to Florida. Sometimes the labels are used to refer to other former ACL and SAL routes, such as the "A line" from Jax to Tampa via Orlando or the "S line" via Baldwin and Wildwood. At the time of the 1967 SCL merger, the new company added "A" and "S" prefixes to the predecessor companies' line symbols and milepost numbers, and this led to the "A line" and "S line" labels.
