Dual Chainsaw engine for go kart

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I have 2 chain saw engines that are 54cc each. I was wondering if it would be possible to make a go kart out of them. Thanx.

Answers

There is almost no way that two 54 cc engines will give you enough power to go. But if you were still going to try, a great idea would be to have each engine powering one of the back two wheels, that way by increasing the speed of one engine, your kart would turn, that way you would solve propultion and steering in one step, and also have close to a 0 turning radius.

-- Joel Argden (Joeldac24@aol.com), May 01, 2003.

The two driven rear wheel idea should work great, 50cc should make it go quite well,a moped is 50cc and will do 35mph.two engines won't make it go faster but it will give you more low end power.

i dont have an answer bu ti do have a question me and my friend are making a gokart approx. 3x2 1/2ft. we want to power it with a chainsaw im not sure how big the chainsaw is approx.7 1/2x10in. if that helps will this work??????

-- brett ahrens (sprintracer013@netscape.net), May 15, 2003.

what size is the bar on the chainsaw?

-- (catskinner7@hotmail.com), May 23, 2003.

hey it sounds like a cool idea. anydoby know were i could get a chainsaw engine? i want to put one on a bike. if so please email me

-- nate (natewillard@hotmail.com), May 24, 2003.

i dont really have an answer but what iv got planned is to just put one small bike wheel on the back and hook the chainsaw engin up to it...and have two push lawn mower wheels on the front. i allready have a steering system all set up so i think im set...what do you people think??

-- connor macqueen (macqueen_connor@hotmail.com), May 29, 2003.

hey now i got 2 chiansaws so i might do that or make two of what i was tlaking about before and i think it had keyword is had a 20 inch bar

-- brett ahrens (sprintracer013@netscape.net), June 01, 2003.

Chainsaw engines will work very well. They have alot of RPM so they could easily power a light go-kart. Good luck and tell me how it turns out.

hi.i have a petrol lawnmower engine, but doea anyone know or have any ideas on how to put it on a pedal bike or a go kart??pls email me!.ben

-- Ben Thomas (toothless696@hotmail.com), June 29, 2003.

Greets, I have a briggs and straton 3.5 HP engine and i am building a small go-kart with it.My problem is how to move the drive through 90 degrees so i can use a chain to the rear wheels. The drive at the moment comes out of the bottom of the engine as it is off a lawnmower..

-- A Morgan (thereaper10005@hotmail.com), July 07, 2003.

You could easily do this. I have a gas scooter that weighs about 50lbs and has a 42cc engine at 2.75 hp and it can pull me up steep hills at around 32 mph.

-- greg tanner (gtanner@mail.com), August 01, 2003.

Yes 54cc will dot the job u want! although u have w chainsaw engines it will not make any differance in top end speed but u will have much faster low end/ acceleration. I am working on my 8th scooter and i have a 38cc and it pulls me at a great speed around 40kph aprox 25mph it even does a slight burn out because i have the carb adjusted to the peek of its speed! dont try inless expert of u have a carb adjust nob! hope all works out!

Hi, im building a bike with a chainsaw engine, but there is one problem. The saw has a clutch, should i keep it, or remove it. I't seems like the clutch won't take the pressure, it slips

-- Ulf (ulfses@hotmail.com), September 22, 2003.

keep the clutch because if you were to go down a hill or something u can use it so that your engine doesnt get stuffed.

-- Tim (jonah_lomu_aye@hotmail.com), October 20, 2003.

Yes, of course the clutch slips, with that kind of load. CHange your gearing so you have a lower top speed, then maybe it won't slip. Or try starting downhill.

-- Bucky (Buckythepunk@hotmail.com), October 23, 2003.

Oh this will certainly not work are you crazy? My mom is 93 and she even says that seals are related to sheep.

-- Wilson John Tucker (fatman1@yahoo.com), October 28, 2003.

i have a question too i need to know how to mound a chainsaw on the back of a bike (i already have a packged holder on there now i need to know how to get it to stay on that)

-- dan costantini (spydee287@aol.com), December 05, 2003.

hi my name is geoff, i am almost 14 years old and am thinking of undertaking this idea myself. A simple way to do this would be to put a larger mounting plate so you would have enough room for the 2 engines, then buy a chain the appropriate length to get to the motor, when you finish this please send me some pics of the results

-- geoff lynch (phatcrx91@aol.com), December 15, 2003.

here let me make it as simple as i can.rught above the pedals (on the low cross bar) screw a 9in. x 9in. piece of ply wood into the the cross bar.then secure the chainsaw to it.then use the bike chain on the chainsaw.you're done. (actually id put the bike chain on the chainsaw before i mounted it) have fun mate!

-- god among insects (argo48@aol.com), January 12, 2004.

sorry about that i meant to say right not rught

-- god among insects (argo48@aol.com), January 12, 2004.

Hello... I made a chainsaw mountain bike (that you may have seen on daily planet, discovery channel). it has 12 gears, and does a smooth 70 km/h..... only 42cc.... the key is in the gear calculations.

i plan on producing a kit that will bolt on to a regular frame mountain bike.

mine is welded, and looks more like a chopper, because of all the extra metal work. It was mainly a test to see if the small motor would work, and its more than ample.

-- Dave Chudak (dchudak@uoguelph.ca), January 15, 2004.

Im currently building a kart using a long circuit race chassis (that Ive bought) and a 750cc motorcycle engine. Should have around 120 bhp and it will be good for 150mph. 0-60mph will take 3 seconds. Ive seen these things built before and they really go some! The biggest engines they race with are 250cc.

-- Kevin Webb - UK (elephants_uk@hotmail.com), February 05, 2004.

i have a 50cc scooter and it goes about 90km/h. A single chainsaw engine is about 20 odd cc. If you have to this will provide ample speed, and seeing as your closer to the ground it will feel faster. My friend is making one with 1 chainsaw engine.

-- MR. MOOSTA (MUSENSEUS@hotmail.com), February 09, 2004.

The only way to make them work is to secranize the engines whitch is qwuit hard. But the power will be great. and speed will be greater chainsaw engines are way fast. so have roll bars.

-- michael nimmo (honker2808@aol.com), February 18, 2004.

if live axle will work fine you cant put on two engines because they both spin the same way you can do it on a live axle go kart but not on a single drive if you put an engine to each back tire one will go forwards and one will go backwards so you wont move any where but if it is a live axle it will work fine

-- joe castalano (matrixbend247@aol.com), February 20, 2004.

I built a custom minibike out of a 60cc Mac chainsaw and bmx bicycle frame, in first gear it would go 45+ (mph). We never bothered with 2nd or 3rd considering I hadn't gotten to the brake issue, ok, it didn't have any, a real issue!LOL. I have pictures and will email them to anyone who would like an idea how to mount the motor. If you have a good strong 54cc motor, you can easily get 45+ too! I kid you not! We clocked it up against our minivan and our test dumby, my brother, was still accelerating. This motor only had about 3hp, so expect a lot out of your 54cc motors and try and stay with just one of them, you will be surprised at what it will do for you, helps keep weight down, and less money trying to connect just one motor up. Got a question, feel free to ask!

-- Martin (skywayflies@earthlink.net), February 29, 2004.

I have one of those granny-kart kinda thingy's, (you know, the three wheeled carts old people use to get around?) its been an on-going project, but its been lightened, and everything that wasnt needed was taken off, so right now its the bare-metal frame and the tires. The seat was taken off the high post, and mounted directly to the frame to lower the CG. theres only one dillema i have, and thats the engine i should use. i have a 33cc chainsaw motor, and a 50cc motor from a mo-ped. i think its better to use the chainsaw, because if i use the mo-ped engine, ill need to raise the seat, where as the chainsaw will fit comfortably behind the seat...any help would be appreciated (sorry about the long post :P )

-- Joey (Donuts_and_burnouts@hotmail.com), March 03, 2004.

by the way, even with all the lightening, the cart stil weighs upwards of 50 pounds (i think) but it has good bearings, so it rolls really easy

-- Joey (donuts_and_burnouts@hotmail.com), March 03, 2004.

it would be better with one engine because it would be a hard job to synchronise the two motors to go together. and if u cant then the go kart will either drift to one side or spin in circles.

-- michael (copperhead165@yahoo.com), May 07, 2004.

a chain saw motor would be to much power for a bike it would strip the gears and sprockets and break the chain. You need beefer sprockets for that.

-- Dallas (banjo_bean@hotmail.com), May 08, 2004.

you would have to petal up to speed then slowly using the motor to get you up to a high speed

-- Dallas (banjo_bean@hotmail.com), May 08, 2004.

trying to build anything with our chainsaw motor

WILL THE CLUTCH that came with the chainsaw slip, or do i need a minibike or go-kart clutch?

Pls answer it wont take much of your time. Thanks.

you guys must be mongoloids or something ,putting chainsaw motors on bikes and scooters? 50cc motors? what the hell is that i got a 160cc honda water pump motor with no governor and built my own bullet proof go kart with solid axle and rack and pineon steering,no bullshit i did it right i cant fuckin believe you idiots can't even figure out how to mount a chainsaw motor ,well if you had a brain you could figure out that a chainsaw motor doesnt have any mounting holes .what are you gonna do,drill some holes in the plastic casing? and a bike chain wont work and what are you gonna use for a throttle? you guys are pathetic. Look,3 things! 1) Get a brain 2) Get some better ideas instead of fuckin scooters 3) Don't build it mickey-mouse style.

why dont't you lazy bums go to the metal store or princess auto or whatever and buy some steel tubing, draw a plan, get a chop saw,cut the steel,do some phat hot welds, and then you gotta frame and then custom make your steering setup get you rear end setup and use your brain.I'm 13 years old i live in Canada ok and i have a small workshop and i built a kickass go kart in there all by myself.I started out with my motor that me and my friend (13) worked on and got it running.I rebuilt my motor 9 times, did a crankshaft swap, new cam, removed governor, internal cleaning and polished my block. So if any thing goes wrong i'll know what it is and i am able to fix it.I did everything on my go kart myself. It was really fuckin hard but i did it with limited amount of saved up money and tools. It took me about a year to do it.I guess im mechanicly inclined for my age but i think if i can do it you numbskulls can maybe think things through and get some better ideas. I was amazed as i saw your postings on how you say its so easy to just mount a chainsaw motor and put a bike chain on it even tho its a stupid idea it still takes some effort to actually do it. I dont think any of you from the sounds of it seem like your able to do any of this kind of work i think your dont know what it takes and if you do prove me wrong. I'll be back How ya like dat.

you can use a bike sprocket and chain for a go kart, nevermind a powered bike. When my dad was younger he had a go kart set up with direct drive (no clutch, sprocket attached straight to the crankshaft) with a bike chain and sprockets, they are much stronger that you know.

you huys are all idiots yes the twin chainsaw is a great idea mount both to a commom rear axle and use racket freewheel coasters to keep them from fighting each other if one work crappy don't do a left right motor thats stupid it will go like hell but 1 engine is better

maybe make a micro scooter they are cool but twin motors are probably to much work keep one as a spare

easy to mount the mount the chain somewhere right weld up a sprocket and gear like mad done and done and done

-- david holland (freedumb35@hotmail.com), June 16, 2004.

if you make a go cart with two engines attached to one solid axel with wheels attached to both ends, and the engines are the same type you should have no problem getting them to work together because if one has a little more power than the other the common axel will keep the wheels spinnig the same speed it will NOT cause problems.

-- Gollum (squishee@aol.com), June 17, 2004.

Im with Troy, you guys gotta think creatively. I built a go kart and has a John Deere 440cc snowmobile engine on it and its fuckin nuts. It can whoop the shit out of anything on wheels. Its geared 4:1, 17 tooth top sprocket and 72 on the axle. This fucker does about 120mph top end and about 100 in the 1/4. Oh and also if anyone was wondering it has so much torque it can pull shittys on pavement. If anyone would like to see a movie of it my friend filmed it on my video camera for proof just email me and Ill send you the clip. Im sure you could make your go kart but would not be very fun or fast it might have a little torque but not enough to have fun with. It would be a very intersting project and take some time. My thoughts are to look on Ebay and look for a 125cc dirt bike engine or something and go from there cuz then you got your whole engine set up and all you gotta do is make the frame and shit. But whatever floats your boat. If I were doing this chainsaw go kart I would pria run different clutches off the engine instead than the ones that are already on the engine and then run chains to jackshafts on both sides and run each rear wheel independantly and gear it down. Or buy 2 Comet Torque Converters for each side if you want low end and some top end it all depends on what you wanna spend.$$$ ANYTHING is possible all you gotta do is work at it and get your mind thinking. Here is a web site that you can find parts on that you might need unless you already have them. http://www.appcokarting.com/ This a good parts book you can order and I found that they were basically the cheapest, unless I found something on Ebay. GOOD LUCK man and if you have any questions you know my email addy.

-- daniel quiles (dolpan13@hotmail.com), June 28, 2004.

take the drum off the centrifugal clutch and cut the chainsaw sprocket off and then weld a bike sprocket to the drum. put it back together and your done

-- Tom (mad_mad1000@hotmail.com), June 29, 2004.

how about if folks copld post some diagrams / images of karts theyre working on or even photos of finished products would be cool. but realy id like to see designs, now that would be cool and helpful too. im not asking anyone to give away their secret technoly here just basic (or better) diagrams. Particualry where steering is concern and also aligning the wheels/ axels , stuff like that. Also good brakes, what are the best type.
anothe thing , what are the best materials to biuld a kart from, if you dont want it to disentrigrate on an impact yet dont weant to build a tank (actually a tank blueprint would be cool.)

I got a 54cc mountain bike cookin, and the best thing is that its a bike and i can ride it round the streets legaly. Although i gotta tell the cops its a 47cc cause anything over 49cc and you need a licence. It has a little trouble taking off (Between 900 and 2000rpm) but once you pick up a bit you can pull 70kph (44mph) with a little skill (not much)and thats what 1 motor does for me. You gotta watch the heat factor, a chainsaw cutting wood has to work far less than it does when carting a dude. Dont let these guys make you feel this is a tough task cause its not at all. PS. I have no pics at the mo besides i'm milkin this one... I'm makin some kits to sell soon, just have to make my sister one and then i'm on it. (Australia)
