First i think that it would depend on the kind of go-kart you build. if you want an off-road application you will need something with low end power, as opposed to a low to the ground shifter cart you would want mid-range or high end power. both situations can be solved by gearing and engine mods. but a lawn mower engine might not be a good idea because of the way the drive shaft is laid out. you need something with a horizontal drive line.

The best engine to use for a go kart is a tiller engine or an edger engine. They have the horizontal drive shaft that is easy to attach a centrifugal clutch to and run a chain to the tire sproket. If you can find a Lawnboy lawn mower, they are 2 stroke and you can turn them sideways to get a side shaft without effecting the performance of the engine. If you try to turn a 4 stroke engine on its side, it'll sieze or burn oil until it siezes becuase the oil slinger is meant to throw oil from the crankcase onto the internal moving parts only when the engine is in its normal position of drive shaft pointing down.

One day my engine broke down. A dreg of barnyard aroma drifted through my nostrils that reminded my of my earlier days and my hobby of barnyard buggery.So I stopped my motor vehicle and inspected the innards when I noticed a large lump of shit sitting atop the carbuerator. I tried the engine again and again... nothing, the fourth time I floored the pedal. VROOOOOM.VROOM.VROM. The car behind me was covered in a fresh layer of feces. I promptly apologized with an inpolite hand gesture again. I shifted into turbo and took off down the interstate. i transformed a Polaris 250 ex into a go-kart... i used the wheels from the polaris and the basic bottom frame, and made a few minor adjustments to the steering. I had an engine from a Kawasaki KDX 250 laying around (the piston from the polaris seized and i didn't feel like fixin it) so i stuck that in there. This thing WHIPS!

I have also discovered that arc welding is the best to use in frames, the averadge HP of an engine is around 5, motor bike engines are best, cooling is always an issue, and gears are as hard as hell to have without a gearbox.

I race go karts all the time. Why would you waste your time trying to build a go kart and get advise from these butt munchers. Try www.4cycle.com or any other real site. I would use an engine that is designed for go kart use - either by briggs or techumse. Not from a lawnmower that has a govenor. Ohh by the way, you all can lick my chode! There are good plans by just searcing the internet or google. There are pre-welded frames at www.norther.com and www.gokartparts.com for around 150. You just put the motor on, wheels, brake, and the like. Probably easier for a first timer go kart builder to do rather than make one from the ground up.

Listen use a lawn mower engine, you just have to open the case and where the end of the piston is the brace that holds it in, take outa screw and make a lil scoop. place it where the screw was and screw the screw in. this will scopop oil into the piston. then change your carb and gas tank to run horizontal instead of vert. mess with a throttle body for the govener.
