Dr. Glasser once said that the term 'Responsibility Therapy'might have been a better name than 'Reality Therapy' for his method of counselling. He said this because the basis and bedrock of Choice theory is that we all are personally responsible for all the behaviours which we choose and he holds that virtually all our behaviours are in fact chosen. We canot blame our 'dysfunctional' home, our parents, our background our schools or our past for our actions....... we alone are responsible for them. He goes on to say that often our actions prove to be foolish or ineffective or even self destructive and often we deeply regret them afterwards; but they were the best actions we could choose at the time and we are responsible for them.

Viktor Frankl had a rather famous quote pertaining to responsibility which I quite like (although it admittedly doesn't involve CT/RT). He suggested that the United States should have, in the harbour of San Francisco, a "Statue of Responsibility" to balance the Statue of Liberty on the east coast. I believe that is is from his first book: Man's Search for Meaning. An interesting image, is it not?
