Too large AVI File

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi, I really like this forum and wondering if any expert can help me with this. I have a Hauppauge WinTV USB and last night I used it to record a movie of 2 hours duration. The picture quality and sound quality are excellent. It created the movie in .AVI format, and the file size was 40GB for a 2 hour long film. (My laptop is a P4, 2.8 GHZ, 60GB Harddisk, ATI Mobility radion 9000,Fujitsu Siemens Amilo). I have the following questions..

1. I want to create a VCD out of this .AVI file. Can I use TMPegc program for that...? (I have Latest version of Nero for creating VCDs from MPEG) 2. How much size the resulting MPEG file will compress...? I heard it may be 1/20th of the original .AVI file. 3. How can I make my Hauppauge WinTV USB automatically create a compressed MPEg rathar than .AVI file...?(I mean real-time conversion into MPEG as it records the movie)

Thanks very much for your help in advance.

Yes, you can use TMPGenc. If convert to MPEG-1 for VCD, you will end up with approximately 1.2-1.4 GB of output. I can't help you with your final question as I've never used the Hauppauge product. Maybe the manual will tell you if it's possible or not to record directly to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.
