Extracting audio

When using TMPEGnc do you have to extract the audio using VirtualDub when creating both VCD and XVCD? The how to instructions at VCDhelp.com instruct you to do it for VCD but there is no mention of audio at all in the XVCD guide.

Using DVD2AVI produces a .d2v and a .wav file, the .wav file is the audio of the ripped DVD.
