Hey Chris my name is Remy, The bare essentials for a gokart is a frame, motor and wheels. The frame should be square tubing(steel) and you will need pillow blocks (bearings) for the rear axel. You also need an axel and you need to decide whether to use pullies or gears. 3.5hp doesn't sound too strong so you won't need to gear it down that much. If you are wondering how a clutch works well there are a few types. The centrifugal clutch has a piece in the middle that expands and engages the clutch and engages at high speeds(chainsaw and trimmers). Write me back for more information and i would be glad to give it to you. I hope this will help for now.

hi i am actually in the process of building a full suspention go cart if you really want to build somthing nice you gotta figure alot or at least a good portion of it out before you start unlike what i did and now im in the process of rebuilding a new frontend with a arms and stuff, however finding a motor was a big part i first found a old 125cc kawasaki with a 5 speed on it but i think my go cart is too big for it so i found a 12.5 hp kohler engine horozontal. i know how to machine and work on milling machines so i know how to make stuff but from reasearch i've concluded that a torque converter would be the best way to get my heavy cart movin and it is like a automatic transmission becaus when both clutches are engaged on the torque converter you get a 90:1 ratio wich will get ya movin if you gear it right.... good luck
