video capture device not recognized by Windows XP

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 Bus connected to a Sony TRV230 digital camcorder. 2 weeks ago I was able to capture one of my travel videos and burn into VCD, but now for some reason I cannot let any of the software (Windows Movie Maker, VideoWaveIII or Ulead to recognize the camcorder. I am using Windows XP.

When I plug the cable out, I hear the Windows sound that something has changed or so, but it does not give me any indication of what changed. I tried updating the 1394 Bus driver, unstalling, letting the system recognize again, etc. There seems no problem in recognizing the capture card, but for some reason, I can not see the camcorder. I would think maybe it is not compatible or something if I had not captured using the same camcorder 2 weeks ago. Does anybody have any idea ?

I searched the internet, but could not find anything. Thank you.

You can find out if something has changed by looking at device manager before and after plugging the 1394 cable in or out, in imaging device where the camcorder should be reported as MS DV camcorder or something. Controlling a camcorder through 1394 can be tricky and here are a few things to note: 1st, best if your capturing/NLE (non-linear editing) program is meant for your OHCI 1394 card (were they bundled together?). Some OHCI cards do not work or work intermittently with some NLE programs (VideoWave III does NOT have a stellar record in this, and some proprietary 1394 cards ONLY work with a specific bundled NLE program), and some can control ONLY this or that brand/model of camcorder. Of course within the program u have to choose your camcorder brand/model to effectively control it. 2nd, aside from that pesky Windows moviemaker (can u uninstall it?) try having only one NLE installed at a time. EVEN IF u close one NLE program, unless you reboot, it may STILL retain control of your camcorder, making it unavailable to the other NLE, which you presently now open. I use an ADSTech PyroPlatinum 1394 card that came bundled with Premiere6.5 and the combination works flawlessly Windows XP, having tried Sony DCRTRV120K & DCRTRV330E, Cannon MV400i & GL1, and Panasonic NVDS28EN.

Hi,

I have the same problem. My camcorder recognized that the Iee1994 is enabled (I have the DV IN written on the screen), but with any software I use, The cam is not recognized... I haven t found anything either for the moment.

With USB, it works fine, but not IEEE1394...

Have u found a soluiton ?

(i m using XP too)

Actually I was able to fix the problem. It was not a really straightforward method, rather cumbersome, but it worked.

First thing I did, I procedurally uninstalled all Windows XP patches that were automatically installed by the OS, assuming that one of the modifications was the root cause of the problem. After I completed it, still did not work though.

Then I physically removed the IEEE1394 Firewire card and uninstalled it from XP. Then put it back again and restarted the computer (without attaching the DV camcorder), then I attached the camcorder, booom, magically the device appeared in Device manager and all software associated the video capture device saw the camcorder properly.

So I can not really tell how it worked, but it might be a combination of things together. So try physically removing and putting back the card. I hope it works.

Ive had the same problem, and after a really crappy weekend searching the net.. I decided that it was a direct X problem. I downloaded DirectX9 runtime from the microsoft site and installed it.

It fixed all my problems!!!
