Cemetary: James Talbot Ryan

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I am doing research on James Talbot Ryan, who founded Eureka, CA, in 1850. I understand that he died in San Francisco. He was Senator and Assemblyman in the late 1800's. He is considered the "Father of Eureka." Because he died in San Francisco and his body can't be found in any Eureka Cemetaries, we believe he must have been buried in SF. How can I find out if he was buried in SF, and where? I would like to take a rubbing of his tombstone. We also would like to find out more history about him. We are building a museum to study him and his relationship with the Indians. Please write to me with any responses. Thank you! greneyes46@aol.com

I bet he's buried in Holy Cross in Colma, since he's got an Irish name. If you call them at (650) 756-2060, they'll be able to confirm whether he's interred there, and if so, a grave location.

Dear Carol, I saw a photograph of his tomb which originally was located at Laurel Hill Cemetery, one of the many cemeteries that San Francisco demolished in the 1930's. Many of the graves there were relocated to the Cypress Lawn cemeterey in Colma(if you wish to read about that you can find info on removal of the cemeteries at this website your at under cemeteries. It's pretty sad what they did and they apparently didn't get all of the bodies out as they originally stated. They are sometimes still happened upon out at the Lincoln Golf Course or when excavation has been done for various reasons at where the old grave sites were. You may be able to track down the tomb the Cypress Lawn office along with some other history on the move.
