My DVD player won't recognize my VCD!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I am desperately trying to successfully view my home movies on my DVD player! I created a file in Windows Movie maker (comes with XP), and then converted it to MPEG-1 format using the TMPGE converter. I checkec and triple checked the parameters set forth for VCD compliance.

The player claims to be compliant with viewing VCD, but I can't even get it to acknowledge that the disk is present. It responds "NO DISC" but I can see the files listed on the CD in my PC. I have made sure to close the session on the CD, and have had no luck! Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

PS - I am in the US, so I have specified both NTSC and NTSC film as the output, with no change in luck.

Thank you!

I had this probolem. Does your DVD player play MP3's or CD-R's? If it doesent, try burning your VCD to a CD-RW, that worked for me.

Your DVD player doesn't read CD-R. There IS NO way it will read CD-R. Buy one that will, taking your created VCD to test potential ones with.

Chances are the others are right. Your DVD doesn't support CD-R. CD- RW will most likely work. But, the other post is incorrect saying that it won't play CD-R. It is possible. Some DVD players that don't "support" CD-R will play certain brands for CD-R. Try http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php and look up your DVD player. Check the reviews and see if anyone suggests a brand that works.

GOT IT! Thank you all for responding. The problem definitely lies in my Panasonic DVD-RV30 player. It does not recognize CD-R, so I burned it onto a CD-RW (even though my drive is a CD-R on my computer), and BAM! It works! However riduculous this may sound, it works. The owners manual for this particular player says that it does not support CD-RW, so I can't explain why I can do it now, but I can. THANKS!

For all of the rest of you wh read this thread, VCDHELP.COM is the bst source for what your vcd/dvd player will or will not play. The Panasonic DV30 DVD/VCD player will not play CD-R discs. Period. It will play select cd-rw discs like Memorex Platinum CDRW. That's for VCD's. Now onto DVD. It seems the opposite is true in this case. It won't play DVD-RW discs, but will play DVD-R discs like Memorex DVD-R. I honestly would tell anyone not to purchase this player, and if you have already, pawn it and get one that will play whatever disc you stick in it!
