pretty slow around here

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

this forum has been pretty slow,,,supposed most are getting ready for winter,,,, luckily I did most of that in Aug,,LOL,

Been working on getting the garden good and ready,, leaves,, and such. Got a line of some manure,,, picked up a pickup load tonight,, I get to spent tomarrow, wheelbarrowing it out back.

Went to the Dr's today,, got my date for sugery on my other ankle. Went in for the floroscope,,, thing is almost as bad as the other one,, I jsut havnt messed it up as much,, though it is starting to pain me,, cause its now,, "the weakest one". SO, Ill be laid up for a few months again,, what a pain,, but I figure I better get it fixed before i mess it up like the other one,, should heal better.

Candles are selling ok, better thatn last year,,, have them in more places, so that helps alot. Making plans for the bees next year,, expanding,,, and what IM going to try to produce more of. Going to go for more wax and proplis than honey. ILl still get honey, but ti will be considered a by-product at that point. The wax and propolis have a higher wholesale value than honey,, so, if I need to, I can buy honey from another local beekeeper if I need too. Wax I need,, and I hate to buy that.

Well, the vegetables that I wanted to sell last summer did not do well. I only got some veggies to eat, and some to share with the owner of the land that my other garden sat on.

I blame the VERY cold, wet spring for most of it. We had bugs galore, and hot weather plants were badly set back. I planted string beans 3 times: the first 2 failed due to the cold, wet weather and the last planting was eaten by rabbits.

Of course, once the spring was over the drought decided to come and pay us a visit, which meaned that it quit raining pretty much entirely for the rest of the summer. I hauled water in 5 gallon containers, which was VERY hard work, only to see the bugs and rabbits get most of the garden at Phils place.

I DID sell blackberries, and last winter I sold 8 Christmas trees. I intend to make wreaths of trees too funny- looking for Christmas and offer them soon.

Went to the Small Farm Today conferance in Columbia, Missouri and had my usual good time. I bought 100 tuberose bulbs for $50 while I was there: the vendor SWEARS that NO bugs eat tuberose, which would make a delightful change! :-) The bulbs are VERY large look and healthy, and I have high hopes for them. Each one should produce a bloom next year I am told: they are VERY fragrant, and if I get $.50 a stem I should break even this first year, with a profit NEXT year! They need to be kept cool this winter, so I will keep the in the fridge in brown paper bags.

They are not hardy in this area, or EVERYONE would be growing them! I know of only one other grower, and she always sells out early at the farmers market. Or, perhaps I will offer them to florists and save myself a day of selling at the market. We shall see.

Meanwhile, it is SOOO cold and wet. Ice on the roads this morning, and the frost didn't melt in the shade until 11 AM. Rain every day or two. Man, winter sure came early this year!!!!!!

It's been chilly here but now we are in for some more normal temps- high 50's to mid 60's. I still don't have heat but I'm hoping they will have the new circuit board by mid week. I've been working on caulking and putting up some plastic on the upstairs windows. When we bought the place we were told the storms were in the garage, well there's not a single storm window that fits the actual windows in the house. Next time I'll do some better investigating. LOL!! Planning the Thanksgiving menu, we're having another couple over for dinner which will give me an excuse to bring out all the nice china & decorations & stuff. The grass has stopped growing so as soon as it quits raining I will do the final mowing & trim for the season. Next week I'm cleaning carpets, painting the upstairs bedrooms and re- tiling the upstairs bathroom. I still haven't decided if I want to carpet the stairs, I have the carpet but I've had bad experiences with falling down carpeted stairs so I may just repaint them. I can't wait for the garden catalogs to start coming. There's always more things I'm interested in growing than I've got room for but it's still fun to dream. Have a good night,

Its so been busy around here, I don't know whether I'm coming or going. I hate to tell it but that's not a figure of speech - I went to work tonight, an hour early as usual so Tony can get to bed early enough for school, -- I don't have to be there till 8 in the morning. That was an hour wasted, not to mention carrying a sleeping 50lb child in and out of the cold rain. That will be a surprise for him in the morning when he wakes up at home instead of where he went to sleep! He's a pretty cool kid. He chose his Indian name this weekend, Little Bear Talking. You've no idea how appropriate this name is for this kid. I'm sure there is or should be some sort of ceremony involved in this but unfortunately I don't know the customs. When we were getting in the car to leave I noticed a flat on the old truck. I suspected it had a slow leak. Could the temp change have amde it go down faster? Well, can't change it now, its been raining here for days ans and everything it muck. I'm not qite thru with the weatherizing projects. This house was originally built as a lake cabin, it was never meant for year old habitation and it gets pretty cold. Thank goodness I'm in Texas. Except the cold rain brings out the scorpions and centipedes.

Temp change CAN make a slow leak leak faster,, has to do with the contraction of the rim,, also depends on the position of the leak and where its at when parked. Most likely its where its sitting on the ground or opposite of that point.
