I had thought that epigensis in psychology began with Piaget, who had borrowed it from the biological (viz. embryological) theory of his time and before. I am not positive, however. You might have a look at Fred Weizmann's chapter in a book I co-edited last year: _The Transformation of Psychology_ (APA, 2001).
