What is the similarities and differences of a psychologist "knowing something" compared to a member of the lay public. What theorist is a good place to start

The latter is often referred to as "folk psychology," something that has recently gained the attention of professional psychologist themselves. A nice overview of folk psychology and how it might compare with professional or "expert" ways of talking about things can be found in the following text: Jones, D., & Elcock, J. (2001).
