when is a resurface not an option

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Joints : One Thread

I was told by a Dr that a hip resurface is not an option for me as I have shallow hip sockets---but excellent bone---I would like to keep that bone if possible ---any info on this would be greatly appreciated--Thanks Janis Dibert ddibert@louisa.net

Resurfacing is usually performed primarily for femoral head pathology such as osteonecrosis or fracture. If acetabulum (hip socket) is involved, resurfacing is not likely to be appropriate.

Are you being told about hemiresurfacing, rather than full resurfacing in which both acetabular and femoral components are fitted? See www.activejoints.com and its associated yahoo group "surfacehippy". Lots of good, up to date information there.

Janis,

You should not take the advice of only one doctor when considering any kind of major surgery. If the 'Dr' you spoke with does not perform hip resurfacing him or herself, then you obviously need to get an opinion from a surgeon who does this kind of surgery, and preferably a surgeon who is considered the *expert* with this kind of surgery.

I travelled to the UK and Belgium to have personal consultation with the world's leading experts in resurfacing - and decided then what I would do. If you consider this surgery important for yourself, the thousand dollars you spent doing this will be well spent indeed.

Only you can decide what you want. But you have to do the research.

Dear Janis

I have just had a very successful hip resurfacing at 77 years of age.The doctors advise to seek advise from people who are into hip resurfacing is excellent. Yo need good bone density and a good experienced surgeon
