Help! Need to build a cheap hovercraft,

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

Hi I'm considering building a hovercraft for my Physics ISP.

I've read all the post I can find regarding hovercrafts on the forum. So I got some ideas from that. But there are many things that I'm still uncertain about.

I want to build one that can support me on it. I only weight 140 Lbs. I was suggested to use a vacuum cleaner but I really dont see how that is going to work because aren't vacuum cleaners too heavy? and they dont seem that powerful.

Some of my questions may seem naive but after watching the hovercraft episode last year, I always wanted to build one. So I hope you can take time to answer someof this.

1. How big should the base be? What material is cheap, sturdy, and light enough for this project? 2. I read a lot about the skirt, but I don't know which material to use. Can someone tell me the name and where I could find the material? 3. For air supply, if I use my vacuum cleaner, will I be able to use it as a vacuum cleaner again after the project is done? Also, what other things can i use as the air supply? 4. Will I need a second air supply thing to propel the craft? I always thought so, but I read somewhere on the forum that you don't. 5. Is there a website of somesort where I can see the basic idea of how to build one. (Free site pls, I'm on a low budget :P )

Wow, you've read this far, thx. Now, I would really appreciate it if you gave some answers :)

Answers

The base should be as small as possible less base equels less weight and power needed. Try using a leaf blower for the power you can pick one up for about 50 bucks. For the skirt use plain old rubber tarping. Make sure to do an S stitch on the corners. Good luck. Ted

-- Ted Fort (island_mon@mailcity.com), September 29, 2002.

thx, i'll try leaf blower

but... smallest as possible? since force = pressure X area, wouldnt that be bad? I mean I dont want it too big but I dont think going smallest as possible would be wise.

as for the skirt, how high should it be? would a high skirt be better since F = Pressure X area?

How to Build Your Hovercraft

Printer-friendly format Email this story

Caution: Kids, don't attempt to build or operate a homemade hovercraft without adult supervision.

Build your hovercraft

Now it's time to start building your hovercraft. Follow the steps below and consult this simple diagram.

1.Build it: Platform 1.Cut plywood into a disk shape. 2.Drill a 5/16-inch hole in the exact center so that the 2-inch bolt easily passes through it. 3.Cut a hole to exactly fit the hose from the leaf blower or shop vac. Place the hole slightly off-center, about four inches away from the hole for the bolt.

2.Build it: Air cushion 1.Lay plywood on top of the plastic sheet. 2.Fold the edges of the plastic sheet over the plywood and secure it with a staple gun about every four inches. 3.Cut off excess plastic sheeting. 4.Tape down edges of plastic with duct tape.

3.Build it: Vents 1.Poke a hole in the center of the small plastic disk. 2.Place it on the plastic sheet. 3.Cut six small 2-inch vent holes in the sheet about two inches from the plastic disk. Be sure to keep about two inches of plastic between the vent holes. 4.Connect with the bolt, nut, and washers.

4.Build it: Get ready to go 1.Use duct tape to seal any holes and reinforce weak areas. 2.Flip the hovercraft over so the plastic sheet is at the bottom. 3.Stick the leaf blower or shop vac in the hole and turn it on.

The finished product

Use your homemade hovercraft on a smooth surface like linoleum or TechTV's studio floor. Just turn on the motor, wait for the plastic to inflate, and hop on to glide around. The hovercraft can support hundreds of pounds -- Chris, Cat, and Roger have no problem riding the "Call for Help" hovercraft.

When you're tired of gliding, give yourself a few feet to come to a complete stop, and turn off the motor.

ok kiddo here is the scoop this hovercraft is or serious riding parts 1 4x8 3/4 plywood several (for the perimeter of the plywood) 1/2 inch by 4 inch boards cut several small 2x4 pieces for place them 1/2 inch inside the 4x8 plywood use wood screws , the attach the 1/2 x4 inch boards so basically you have a partially open box closed on all sides closed on top open on bottom. use a 3.5 hp briggs motor , attached to the motor is a old car fan deep cut off of a like 1970's thunderbird or what ever .. dont screw around use locknuts on the blade cut a circumfrance hole for the fan to go just inside of cut on top of your box frame attach motor. now use blue tarpalin canvass attach by stapleing to 1/2 boards now use a large washer and attach the very center to the top plywood then cut 5 2 inch holes about eight inches from center. this will produce your skirt and airtrap for your propulsion no push fan is necessary . to steer use arudder at speed or lift cater wheels or a small electric motor pusher . i have built 10 hovercrafts good luck

Hey kids, Im in the process of designing a kick ass hover craft for a design project for school. we are planning to make it a one person ride that goes fast 30-40 km/h (15-20mph i think) We are analyzing all the possibilities (one engine or two, etc) and will come up with a kick ass ride. If I get time Im going to build something based on the plans. If I remember I will post what I can when Im done in early Dec. If you have any questions you can email me and I will see what I can do. I probably wont check back here too often. I would like links to good sites if anyone has got any.

you can use a over turned inflatubul boat as a skirt connect that two the bottom of a peice of plwood the same size now you need to get a leaf blower and cut an opropriate siz hole for the tube to blow directly in the center of the over turned infatabul boat now that you can float you should ge a 24 inch prop from a local hobbie shop connect the two a weed eater then bult the weed eater to the back of the plywood be sure to put a mesh gard over the prop trust me

you will have to rig up your own ruders i recomend using two of three but im not that far in my own project

Go to 4wings.com and you will find all you need to get started on a big one. it shows how to do everything. Sizing your engine(s) is kinda up to you but not too hard to figure out. Big in the back (thrust), 30Hp will get you to around 30mph and smaller up front (lift). There is only 0.1 psi under the thing so you just need enough air to replace what escapes from under neath dont go over 15Hp you wont need that much.

any other questions??

Folks, It looks like there are some serious people in this thread. I've never done this before... But, I've got a project in works in my basement. I want to use a 1.5 HP engine for lift, with a 4 x 2 ft egg shaped base, approx. 900 inch sqr. I intend to use a car engine fan for lift. No propulsion. Total weight < 200 lbs. Any words of wisdom? Does this sound like a workable arrangement? I want to use the device on ground, street & snow. I intend to operate it standing wearing skate gear. Sincere thanks.

-- Michael Ajamie (michaelajamie@adelphia.net), December 13, 2003.

guyz lets all be nice and focus on the original subject. you'll need a 4ft by 7ft piece of 1/4" plywood. a leaf blower and a weed eater motor. tools will be a saw, a drill, drill bit (circular kind),and a couple beers. you'll also need 2in. pvc pipe about 10ft to be safe. ill add more in a a couple min i gotta look at my log brb

-- god among incsects (argo48@aol.com), December 25, 2003.

you'll need 10 90 degree angle pvc elbows, about 5 pvc "t" elbows,a chair, and a propeller. you'll need to construst a housing for he pvc and blower holes. (make a box with no bottom, put 5 holes in it.2 on the left,2 on the right and one bigger one on the front for the blower nozzle.)now place it in the center of the craft and position the pipe where the air flow is balanced inside the skirt.you'll have to find out where to put the pipes because different designs have different balances. if yo are really stumped email me for a pic. maybe it'll help

~in the blazing fires of his world there is no peace~

-- god among insects (argo48@aol.com), December 25, 2003.

crap i lied you need no 90 degree elbows you need 4_45 degree elbows and 7_2" pvc "t" 's and a case of beer (make sure the blower is gas powered)

-- god among insects (argo48@aol.com), December 30, 2003.

I built a simple test platform very cheaply and easily with no tools at all! I went to a pool supply company and bought a 7 foot diameter "fun Island" raft. It consisted of 3 concentric rings, approximately 10 inches thick, each with their own inflation port. The center was an inflated puck with holes for soda cans, removable so it could be used as a floating bar. Here is the deal: remove the center float. Only inflate the outer ring. I found an old pvc patio table top on a junkpile (broken legs). It was a hexagon instead of round, but close enough. Paint the smooth side of the table top with contact cement, and the outer ring of the raft (while inflated). Stick them together, plug a leaf blower into the hole in the table used for the umbrella, instant hovercraft. Will lift a lot of weight depending on your blower. Very sensitive to balance. A better solution might be to use three smaller tubes, with a triangular frame such that when you sit on the frame, each corner presses down in the very center of each tube. This would keep the weight centered in each tube to minimize loss, even though it may not be centered in the frame. P.S. Try not to be too hard on the people using this forum for insults instead of help, it's not their fault they are too stupid to contribute. Besides, a lifetime of selling fries at McDonalds will be punishment enough for their ignorance. :)

Hi I am Joey. I am 15. This is not a normal craft, but it works. Hey,i know a great way to build a hovercraft, you can build one for cheaper then you think, okaythe cheapest way is to build it from air up raft carefully cut out bottom get a sheet of wood that covers theentire area of the tube, cut the eges off and sand untill smooth now use liquid nail to seal it on,now get 1 leaf blowerand and a weed waker, and a pice of 90 degree angle pvc pipe cut a hola just big enough for the pipe to fit, turn leaf blower on put it on the pvc pipe and u should hover for thrust take the weed waker a part and mount a propeller at the end of the hover craft i dont know how to steer but you figer it out have fun!

Hey, this summer I want to build a one person hovercraft with my friend. We have built the kind of hovercraft that you use a leafblower with and it was fun. Now we want real power. He said that we can make one with a lawnmower engine and radiator fan to a car. The engine that we got was shot so we werent able to do it. Does anyone have any ideas so that we can make a cool but not costly hovercraft?

i'm tryin to make a hovercraft with a 6x6 in. platform that will hover above the ground approximately 2-4 inches and go at least 10 yards holding ten lbs. i figure that a leaf blower should work for this but i dont know how i should construct the skirt and what type of material i should use. using a pool raft sounds like a good idea but how would i get this to work? i'm kinda lost with instructions so if theres any pictures or site somebody could send me to that would help me a lot.

-- Fill Mycrackin (rgeatm99@yahoo.com), April 20, 2004.

Hey im currently building a 'hedgehopper' hovercraft, uses a 4cyl 2ltr petrol car engine to turn two large propulsion fans. control is by rudder/elevator/throttle. Each fan has an airscoop behind it, using up about 25% of the fan area, to pressurise the skirt. Seats 2. Here's the cool bit - small, stubby wings with a hight AOA take advantage of ground effect, and hopefully at speeds over about 40mph the hovercraft will become fully airbourne, at which point the scoops may be retracted whilst the craft still flies. Sound stoopid? its been done before - check out www.hovercraft.com. Whilst the craft will technically be airborne, it will lose ground effect at heights over about 5-6ft, and return to an altitude where wnough lift is generated (and thus cant really be classed as an aeroplane). It is feasable that with enough speed built up, short hops of a higher altitude could be carried out, hence me christening it as 'hedgehopper'. Still in the early construction phase but mail me if you're interested im happy to discuss.

Yes fire extinguisher's will work for propolsion, they will enable u to steer in a general direction... the remote would be pretty hard to build from scratch, u should just take a remote control car apart and use the steering receiver from that, this would enable u to use a remote

Hi! I'm trying to build one craft as well. You have to cut a desk 1,5 x 2,5m, use some aluminium bars around to make it unbrakeable when crash. For the skirt use material from a tend. It is waterproof and quite hard as well. This fixe to the metal frame by screws. The hight of a skirt should be cca 30-40cm. Make a hole in a desk 40 x 30cm where the air from properel will go under the desk. Then make a cover (roof) around the whole that will be cca 1/3 of a properel hight. I thould be like a small box with one side open (properel side). As a engine use normal 50ccb bike engine. It has some power and not so expensive. As a properel you can use a fan flaps from some industrial fan. Also works well. The radial should be cca 50 cm. How to assamble the fan to the engine I cannot help, you have to find it out... :-))) Also to fix the engine to the frame depends on the system of engine fixing. Well, I think the stearing system you can find by yourself as well, just check some pictures ;-) I had some luck, for me it works. Not perfectly, but works :-) Good luck!

ULTRA-SIMPLE HOVERCRAFT

NEEDED: PLYWOOD, 3ft or 4ft square, 3/8in or 1/2in thick (or buy a 48in precut round tabletop). PLASTIC SHEET, 1ft larger than the above wood (Avoid using 1mil thickness garbage bags, instead use a heavy 10mil plastic dropcloth from a paint store, 'Visqueen' sheet, or an old plastic shower curtain) LEAF BLOWER (battery powered, gasoline), or use the old- style 'ShopVac' cannister vacuum cleaner which has a blower outlet SMALL PLASTIC DISK, coffee can lid, or 6" disk 1/8in thick plastic BOLT, 2in, 1/4-20 NUT, 1/4-20 FENDER WASHERS (TWO) SMOOTH FLOOR (linoleum, ball court, or smooth concrete) electric saber saw, drill, razor knife, staplegun, duct tape Optional: lawn chair and clamps/screws to hold it down. Optional: some sort of rubber bumper for the edge. Nail on some old bike tires? Just cover it with duct tape?

INSTRUCTIONS: MAKE THE WOOD DISK Cut out your plywood disk. You can leave it square, or experiment with other shapes instead of round, but the sharp corners can hurt people. Round is best for safety.

Drill a 5/16in hole in the exact center, and make sure that the 2in bolt easily passes through it.

NOTE: people tell me that you can avoid using a big bolt. Instead, fasten down the small plastic disk with several short wood screws. This is a big improvement! Kids sitting on the hovercraft won't get poked in the butt anymore by that big bolt sticking up.

Make a hole in the plywood which exactly fits the end of your leaf blower or shopvac hose. This hole must be placed half way between the center of the disk and the edge, as shown below. It's a good idea to trace the hole in pencil on the wood (place the mouth of the leaf blower on the wood and trace around it.) It DOES NOT have to fit perfectly. Later you can seal any leaks with duct tape. Or just let it leak. The hose should be flush with the bottom surface (don't let it stick out or the floor will block the air flow.)

MAKE THE PLASTIC SHEET Next, lay your plywood disk on the center of your large plastic sheet. Fold the edges of the sheet up over the plywood, then use the staplegun to staple it to the top of the plywood disk. Put a staple about every 4 inches. The plastic should be tight against the wood, but don't pull it TOO tight or the plastic will tear loose when inflated. When finished, you can cut off the excess plastic. If you wish, used duct tape to tape the edge of the plastic down to make it look nice.

ADD THE "SKIRT LIFTER" Poke a hole in the center of the coffee can lid. Attach it to the bottom of the hovercraft as shown below. It goes over the plastic sheet. It pins the plastic sheet firmly against the plywood. (The coffee can lid forms the "donut hole" when the leaf blower slightly inflates the plastic into a "donut" shape.)

CUT THE CENTER HOLES Use your razor knife to cut six vent holes in the plastic as shown below. They should be about 2in diameter. They must be placed within a few inches of the coffee can lid. Space them out so that there is plenty of plastic between each of them. But if they are too far away from the center, they will become plugged when the plastic sheet lays flat against the floor. If the plastic between the holes is too narrow, it will tear. If you wish, reinforce the thin necks of plastic between the holes using a couple of layers of duct tape.

DONE! Flip your hovercraft over so the plastic sheet is on the bottom. Place it on a smooth floor. Stick the leaf blower into the hole and turn it on. The plastic on the bottom should inflate. If it does not, lift the plywood up a bit to let the air get in and inflate the "skirt." The hovercraft will lift up slightly and start gliding around.

DEBUGGING If it doesn't work, first read the above article again to see if you missed anything.

Always make sure to lift the wood disk up a few inches while the blower is running. If the disk stays flat against the floor, then the air can't get out of the blower, and the plastic sheet will never inflate.

When you turn it on for the very first time, run it on a smooth shiney floor such as linoleum or a wooden Gym floor. Try other kinds of rough floors and rugs later, after you know it works. Smooth dirt works OK, but it makes a big cloud of dust. I've never tried it on water.

If too much air is leaking from the around the leaf blower, add some temporary duct tape at the point where the nozzle goes into the hole in the wood.

Still no luck? Maybe your plastic sheet is too loose. Turn the hovercraft up on edge and turn on the blower. The plastic sheet should inflate, and it should lift up from the wood by only three or four inches. If the sheet is too tight then it will tear loose from the staples. But if it's too loose it will form a floppy bag and won't glide around.

DON'T use a hair blow-dryer, it won't work. You need either a "Shopvac"-style vacuum cleaner, or a lawn leaf blower. If you use a Shopvac, remove the dust bag and use the Shopvac's blower outlet (the hovercraft needs pressure, not suction!)

HOW IT WORKS The air inflates the plastic which pushes upon the floor and provides a ground-hugging "skirt." This lifts the entire hovercraft. The coffee-can lid provides "strain relief" for the plastic sheet, so that the inflated plastic doesn't tear loose from the center. The coffee can lid also lifts up the plastic so air can escape through the vent holes and pressurize the center donut-hole. The air then leaks along the floor and out from the edges of the hovercraft. This creates an "Air Film Bearing" which has very low friction. The plastic isn't touching the floor. Instead it is riding on a thin layer or "film" which is made out of air. Climb aboard!

This hovercraft can support many hundreds of pounds. It works best on very smooth surfaces (linoleum, or school gym floor.)

ps. try putting a small fan on the back and 2 peices of metal on the sidesthat turn so that it is facing behind you hen turns and touches the ground to stop.) this also works for turing.) and if you want to drive on concrete use a non tearable plastic for the bottom,

Yo Sean, I'll help you out. I already built a 4x8 hovercraft, gas powered with a propulsion system and everything. Just e-mail me with any questions, and by the way I'm 14. Check the xinventions forum also, thats where I learned pretty much everything I know about hovercrafts. BTW I'm DEES T850 on xinventions

I need to know how powerful the leaf-blower has to be per weight/size of hovercraft. Tell me now or I will shove monkeys into the microwave and put it on high for 30 minutes.
